Chapter Forty-Five: Regret & Remorse
When Dean Ambrose awoke from the nap that he had taken when the sun had set, he barely had the willpower to even move, much less throw the blanket off of himself. Although it was definitely not one of the worst, the beating that he had received at the hands of Brittany last night was simply brutal. He hadn't expected her to attack him, but he knew that when she began that he was in for a rough time. But he dared not to mention to anyone that he had made the idiotic mistake of underestimating the woman that he had once been romantically involved with. At all.
Apart from the beating, last night had been very eventful. When he had arrived at the arena after just coming off of a live event in Canada, he had been met in the men's locker room by Triple H. The C.E.O. did not seem to be in a good mood and Dean knew that he had every right to feel that way by all means. Regardless of the man's bad mood, Triple H pulled him into a private, enclosed area of the arena and had a conversation with him that was most odd. And it wasn't very pleasing at all.
Much to his dismay, the conversation had started on the topic of John Cena. Dean had respect for one of the most seasoned veterans in the wrestling world, but after what had happened two weeks past, he no longer liked the man and it was clear that John felt the same way. And to add on to the discomfort that he was feeling, Triple H went on to mention that the man was going to officiate a Divas tag-team match that night. But, in a surprising turn of events, Triple H said that an awful amount of revamping had been invested into Raw that night, and one of the things that had been changed was that John Cena was no longer the referee. Instead, it would be him. Dean Ambrose.
Dean almost wanted to convince Triple H to reconsider, but after realizing that they had obviously chosen him for a reason, he did not complain. He questioned the CEO. as to why they had chosen him, but he did not really give a direct answer. He beat around the bush so to speak, saying that Vince and he felt that he was more a of a fitting character to be in that situation. And after they were done, Dean went about his business and had begun to wonder if even bothering to show up had been a good idea.
Later on, to dispel his foul mood, Dean seeked out Roman and chatted with him for a while. They didn't talk about anything specific, except for the fact that Fastlane, the basic go-home pay-per-view before Wrestlemania was just six days away. Instead of having a crappy show just as it had been last year, WWE was apparently pulling out all stops for the pay-per-view. There would be a total of ten matches and oddly enough, the main event, which was rumored to be Roman taking on Seth in a preparatory match, was going to start at 10:30 and end at 10:50. It seemed odd to him, but he pretty much had an idea of what was going to happen. And Dean knew for a fact that he was going to be involved in it no matter how much he had wanted to protest.
Not long after the two friends had stopped debating over who would win the match between Paige and Nikki Bella(which has turned into a bitter on-screen feud), Paige, Trinity, Nikki Bella and John Cena rounded the corner. He thought nothing about their presence, but when they announced that they had to talk to him in private, Dean became instantly annoyed.
Stopping in one of the hallways that looked eerily similar to the one that he had raced down to "rescue" Brittany from the clutches of Bray Wyatt, the quintet stopped. Before any of them began to speak, Dean instantly knew what the topic as going to be about and he did not want to discuss it at all.
Paige and John started off the negotiation, stating that Nikki had some confessing to do. Dean hated the woman and although she was the last person in the world that he wanted to listen to, he was urged to do so. The former Divas champion spun a whirlwind of a tail, exposing all of her nasty collaborations with Stephanie, how she had been a key player in the whole plot to get Brittany fired, when and where she finally realized that she had screwed up, knowing that it was too late to change Stephanie's mind and how it all had finally come together two weeks ago. At first, Dean did not believe it, but when Paige, John and Trinity vouched for her, he knew that it all had to be true for two reasons. One: these were three people that had always been honest with him. Two: they wouldn't have talked to him unless it was absolutely necessary.
It was a lot to take in. Dean stood rooted to his spot, motionless for quite some time. He did not want to believe that what he had just heard was true, but his mind forced him to. Brittany had not been wanting gain more popularity and more notoriety at all. She had been quite comfortable in her role and wouldn't have minded becoming the pathetic sidekick in the long run. She never wanted to use Dean at all. She had wanted nothing from him except kindness, honesty and his heart. He only knew this to be for certain because Paige had made a visit to Brittany's house four days after the breakup and while she was horrified at what she had found, Paige had comforted her and had recorded their conversation in the process.
To hear the audio clip was gruesome enough. It made Dean feel like the world's biggest asshole. He realized that everyone had been right by turning against him. He knew that all of the top executives and the fans had every reason to disapprove of him. While he hadn't really cared in the first place, to finally know that he had seen the light and the err in his ways, Dean felt nothing but regret, sadness, and anger at himself for throwing away what he now knew to be the greatest thing that would probably ever happen to him. Ever.
The interrogation went on for at least three hours. He had been very noisy indeed, asking questions on how she had been, her condition and catching up on everything that he had regretfully missed. Nothing had changed, although Paige had noted that during one of their training sessions that Brittany's scar looked as if it had been ripped open recently. That started a whole mess of horror that Dean did not feel comfortable to discuss. He knew now that he had deserved to have been punched in the face in Triple H's office and to have been brutally attacked later in the night.
Towards the end, Trinity, who was one of the wisest women in the lockerroom, stated that while they had not forgiven him completely, said that the only reason why they had even bothered to tell him all of this was because they were overly concerned for Brittany and knew that if she and him weren't on the same page by Wrestlemania, their careers would be over and that Brittany could never be truly happy again.
Dean knew this to be true and he now felt some similar emotions. He felt more miserable. He realized that he missed Brittany more than he dared to let on. He had felt what he speculated to be love for her even though they had been together for a short time, and he knew that now he would do every and anything to get her to come back to him. The quintet knew it would be a long and tedious process, but they were firmly committed and were not going to stop no matter what.
Although, it had been left up to Dean to make the first move in the high-stakes game of chess.
So while he had been in the trainer's room well after midnight, holding an ice pack to his eyes and received three stitches in a small gash on his neck, Dean had not come up with a single idea. He had told Roman everything, but even the Samoan powerhouse did not have the slightest idea either. It frustrated Dean so badly that he had stayed up until five o'clock that morning. Thankfully, he was not scheduled for tonight's Smackdown tapings, so it was an immense relief to draw the curtains to a close and try to sleep a little bit longer. His mission was set, but now it was just a matter of putting it into motion. While he knew that it would be a long time before any sort of forgiveness let alone reconciliation could be reached, Dean wished that he could meet his goal sooner.
But one thing did not settle well with him. Paige had briefly talked to him before the two had left the arena separately, and as far as anyone was concerned, Brittany did not know a single thing about their little private meeting. It felt wrong, but even Dean had to agree that for now, it was the right thing to do.
