Snotlout shoved Hiccup hard and he fell right on his butt, painfully. Hiccup gritted his teeth and glared up at him.

"Whacha gonna do, Usless? Math me to death?"

He laughed and his fellow bullies joined in. Hiccup stumbled to his feet and glanced at Rapunzel, who was watching from afar. She was biting her nails, not sure what to do.

"Let him fight his way out of it," Merida said with a shrug. "It's the only way he'll ever learn to defend himself."

"Not if they kill him first!" Rapunzel tried to reason with her.

Jack rolled.his eyes. "Yeah right. The twerp'll be fine."

Rapunzel glared at him. "What if you were in his shoes?"

"I'd punch Snotlout in the face," Jack said with a smirk.

"Well if you're not gonna help him, I will," Rapunzel turned on her heel and headed straight for the bulles.crowding Hiccup.

Two of the other boy's had grabbed Hiccup by the arms so he would try to run. Hiccup wouldn"t have even tried. He may not have been the biggest boy in school, but he was no coward. He stood defiently as Snotlout's.steel-tipped army boot dug into his.knee. He gritted his teeth and tried not to let a small cry of pain escape his lips. His knee went out from under him, but the other two bullies were still holding up Hiccup by his arms.

"Hey!" Someone yelled. Hiccup looked up to see Rapunzel, the only person who was ever genuenly nice to him, standing there with her hands on her hips. Her long, blond hair hung over her shoulders. "I suggest you put him down."

"Or what?" Snotlout sneered.

Rapunzel seemed ro hesitate. "I'll-I'll...um."

"You'll have to mess with us," said a voice behind her.

Hiccup was surprised to see that Jack and Merida were behind Rapunzel.

"Are we really going to do this?" Merida whispered. "Maybe Snotlout's beating him up for a reason."

Jack rolled his eyes. "Come on."

He walked past Rapunzel and shoved his way through the crowd of boys so he was facing Snotlout. Jack was about a head taller then him, but Snoutlout just sneered. "Yeah, now I'm scared. Orphan boy's gonna ger me!" He laughed, along with the rest of the boys.

Jack flushed slightly and gritted his teeth, making his hands into fists.

Merida shoved past everyone and grabbed Snoutlout by the jersey. "You take that back Jorgenson!"

Now, Snoutlout was scared of Merida. She might have been shorter then him by a few inches, but she packed a pretty good punch that never hesitated. He took an involuntary step back, but Merida was still holding onto him. "I said," she said, stomping on his foot. "Take it back, ye Snotfaced dumba-"

"Okay!" Snotlout yelled. "I take it back!"

Merida smirked, shoving him into his friends. "Now I sugest you run, 'cuz my bow's feeling thirst!"

Everyone knew what a deadly shot Merida was. And she was an exellent hunter, though she always aimed for your hand or foot, nothing too serious.
The two boys holding Hiccup dropped him as they ran. Snotlout tried not to look scared, but he did back up, slowly. He turned to Hiccup. "You're lucky this time, you one legged freak!" Then he turned on his heel and walked away slightly faster then normal.

Hiccup took a deep breath and looked up at his former bullies. Rapunzel didn't know about when they had taunted him in the halls,or dumped their trays on his head at lunch. They were the type that would humiliate him, but try not to hurt him.

Rapunzel walked over. "You okay?"

Hiccup nodded, rubbing his knee. "Fine," he muttered.

Merida rolled his eyes. "Come on, Jack. Punzie. Let's go."

Rapunzel glared at her. "Not yet." She turned back to Hiccup, holding out a hand. He took it and she helped him to his feet.

"You know," Jack said. "I've been wondering. How'd you loose you're leg anyway?"

"Oh, well," Hiccup said. "I-it's kinda a long story."

Jack shrugged. "What else are you gonna be doing?"

"Well..." Hiccup started, his face feeling warm in the same way whenever he had to talk to strangers or give a presentation. "Before I moved here, me and my dad lived on the coast of the Pacific. My mom had been killed by a pack of wolves when I was a baby, so I don't really remember her, except for a few photos. Anyway, this dog followed me home one day."

"And he took off your leg?" Jack asked.

Hiccup shook his head. "I'm getting there. My dad didn't like him, because he reminded him too much of how my mom died, so I couldn't keep him, but I did anyway. He stayed in the woods outside my house for the most part.

"My dad never found him, but one night, there was a storm and lightning struck our house. It woke up my dad, but I couldn't get out." He bit his lip, remembering how terrifying it was. "Anyway, I would've been gone if Toothless hadn't saved me-"

"Toothless?" Merida asked.

Hiccup blushed. "H-he's my dog." He cleared my throat. "Anyway, my leg had been caught under some of the roof that had caved in." He winced at the memory. "Toothless dragged me out and, well, both of us took a pretty hard hit. He'd lost one of his hind legs as a stray, so I tried to fix it for him. It was made of wood, so it had burned in the fire. And now, we both are missing something."

Hiccup glanced up at the other kids.

"Can I see it?" Jack asked.

"Um...okay." Hiccup leaned down and drew up his pant leg to reveal an expertly made prothstetic. "It was about a two hour drive to the nearest hospital, so when I did get there, it was too late to save it."

Rapunzel smiled softly at him. "Do you still have Toothless?"

Hiccup nodded. "My dad let me keep him after that."

Merida smirked. "Ya know, my dad lost his leg on a bear hunt."

"Really?" Hiccup asked.

She nodded. "He loves to tell his story to everyone he meets. It gets annoying."

"Um, thanks for the help," Hiccup said. "I guess I should be going now."

"Hold up," Jack said. "You're not just gonna leave, are you?"

Hiccup didn't say anything.

"You know," Rapunzel said. "If you want to, you can hang out with us."

"Do we have to?" Merida moaned softly.

Rapunzel dug her elbow into her ribs. "Besides, if you stick with us, you'll never be bothered by those bullies ever again. They're scared to death of Merida."

Hiccup smiled. "Okay."

Jack punched him playfully in the shoulder. "And you're gonna have to show me that dog of yours sometime."

Hiccup nodded.

Merida glared at him. "I make no promises."
