I ran to stream bank thirsty and dipped my hand in. I brought the water to my lips. It was warm water and did nothing to cool me down. So I did what my mother always told me to do. I closed my eyes and thought cool thoughts. I imagined a stream frozen over in the middle of Winter. All the sudden the water tasted colder. So I kept thinking. I was lying in a snowbank,in the middle a snowstorm...I tried to dip my hand in the water again only to find resistance. I opened my eyes and gasped.

Right where my hand had touched the water, the stream was frozen. I got up and ran as fast as I could.

"Mother! Father!" I yelled as I flung open the door to the house. They came running in.

"What's wrong?" My mother asked, her face clouded with worry. I paused to catch my breath. Then told her with a shaky voice,

"I...I froze the stream! I have magic! How? Why?" Everything whirled in my mind. Overwhelming me.

They stared at me with shocked expressions. "Your sure?" My father asked me, while glancing at my mother.

     I nodded.

My father led my mother over to a corner where I couldnt hear them. They whispered to eachother for a few minutes, before walking back over to me.

"Lydia...if you do indeed have magic you can not tell anyone about it. No friends. No family. Just us will know. The duke is suspicous of magic, he thinks its evil. So its very important to keep it a secret. Do you understand?" My mother spoke in a hushed voice, as if she was afraid of someone hearing, even though we were the oonly ones in the house.

"I understand." I replied in a small voice. I was only 10. This was too big for me.

"Alright," my father said, clapping his hands together."lets forget about this and I'll get back to work!"

Forget? How could I forget about this?
