Today's the day. The day the nightmare begins. Waiting a full day in a basement with an entire village to protect ourselves from some weird sort of monster.

After today we'll have to fix a couple of houses, replant a couple of gardens, rebuild a couple of fences, and so on. First thing's first, grab food and sprint to the school before chaos begins. Mom has already left. Weird.....

As I am walking out the door, I notice something shining in the basement of my house. I don't have time to check. Do I? I live near the entrance of the village. But who is to say the beast won't crash in through the back?

I don't have time to think! What do I do? I start to walk outside.

I then quickly turn around and sprint down the stairs to find something that looks like metal. It has an opening. I don't have time! I pick it up, run upstairs, throw it under my bed, and get to the school before it was too late.

The ground is shaking, it has to be coming. I see Hannah, Emma, and Jack. Hannah and Emma are the coolest friends I could ever have. They except me for the "fifth grader" that I am. Jack on the other hand makes fun of me all the time. He is so lucky that he is dating Emma. If he wasn't, I would have sent him to the moon.

"Hey Lucy! We saved a spot for you!"

"Quiet Hannah, the thing might hear you," I whispered. "You might as well have stood right in the middle of the village with a sign reading, 'FRESH MEAT! COME KILL ME!'"

"Yeah, yeah. Whatever."

Hannah is amazingly positive. Back when we were in the same grade level, (that was a long time ago) she actually wrote a paper on how this terrible day that comes every year is beneficial to our society.

Emma is the fashionista of the group. She comes over once in a while to apprentice with my mom. She is always wearing the nicest clothes. (She obviously touches them up in her free time) I'm not surprised she has a boyfriend already. She has superior good looks. If you compared her beauty to an angel, you would literally see no difference.

It takes so long for the dumb beast to attack. I mean honestly! Our village isn't that big! How long does it take to realize no one is out in the open.

The second I hear a scream from outside, I take all of those thoughts back. I recognize that scream. It's Sophie. One of the girls in my class. It's not possible! How could she still be out there! Is she gone? Is she?
