Chapter 3
As soon as the bell rang, signaling the end of the day, Laurane and I practically raced back to our dorm room, while recapping the day’s events.
My schedule was Science, Math, English, Art, PE, Spanish, and Geography (Laurane had smart math, while I was in stupid math, and she had woodshop and Japanese instead of PE and Spanish).
I hated all of my classes, but then again, I had always hated school. I just hoped that college would be better.
Laurane was going on about what had happened during science.
“I can’t believe you did that,” she was saying, “That was actually one of the worst things that you’ve done in that class!”
I rolled my eyes, already bored of this topic. “I told you,” I said, “It was an accident.” I had already repeated this fifty times throughout the day to Laurane, but she didn’t believe that, and I didn’t blame her. We both knew that I had meant to do it.
“Look,” I said, as we walked into our room. “Let’s just forget about it. We have to get ready for the party, anyways.”
Laurane sighed loudly and dramatically, but she didn’t protest, and the topic was dropped.
That was the thing about me. I liked to do reckless and stupid things, but after they were done and over with, I didn’t like to reminisce over them. It took time away from being able to think up the next crazy thing that I could do.
Laurane and I weren’t even showing up at the party until 8:00, and it was only 3:00, but we both took a long time to get ready for things like this. I mean, since we were girls, getting ready was half the fun of even going out. It was like our Zen time. It was peaceful.
Besides, it was going to take at least an hour to decide what to wear – especially since Aaron was going to be there.
Laurane took a shower first, and while I waited for my turn, I ate a blueberry muffin and read a magazine. There wasn’t anything particularly interesting in it, but when I came across a picture of a bunny rabbit, I freaked out and threw the magazine across the room.
I had a lot of secrets, and one of them was that I was absolutely and completely terrified of rabbits. I knew that it was a crazy and irrational fear, but that didn’t change the fact that they scared the crap out of me. There wasn’t even anything I could do about it.
Of course, Laurane happened to choose that moment to get out of the shower, and the magazine came really close to hitting her. Luckily though, it missed, even though it only missed by a few inches.
Laurane was the only person in the world who knew about my rabbit-phobia, and she thought that it was hilarious. Obviously, I thought differently.
“I saw that picture in the magazine earlier,” Laurane said, “Which was part of why I bought it. I thought you might have liked that.”
