"What's that?" a snobby girl sneered at me. I recognised her from my new class, not that she was my friend. I didn't have any friends, but mommy says I have to try harder at making new ones, because I'm eight now."What's what?" I frowned nervously. The girl's intimidating glare made me uncomfortable.
"That weird thing in your hands," she spat back. I looked down at Mr.Potato in my hands, he was my only friend- why was this girl calling him weird?
"Um, he's Mr.Potato," I answered quietly, clutching the plush toy closer to my chest. The girl flicked back her short plaits and presented me with her own teddy; a pink, sparkly unicorn with a fluffy white mane, "well this is Sparkles, she's much better than that old potato," she declared. I looked down at my light-brown, scruffy friend, but his wide eyes just stared blankly back at me, "well I-" before I could answer she grabbed Mr.Potato from me and threw him with alarming force on the hard ground of the school yard. I gasped in surprise as the girl just laughed spitefully."Hey!" someone shouted from behind us. The girl's laughing quickly stopped as we both turned to see who it was. She was around our age, maybe she was in my class as well. Although I think I would have remembered her. Her straight, raven-black hair fell past her shoulders, and her big blue eyes stared harshly at the bully opposite us, "leave her alone!" she ordered in the same loud voice.
Who was she? "This is my best friend," the blue-eyed girl said. I blinked several times, looking in her direction; I didn't even know this girl! The bully took a step back and hugged her unicorn, "well I don't care," she snarled, turning her pointy nose in the air, "I was leaving anyway."
With that she stomped away angrily, stealing another glance at the girl who had just saved me. She turned to me with a triumphant smile, "serves her right! You can't let people push you around like that you know," she said more softly, her blue eyes staring back into my widened ones.
"Oh, well......thank you," I mumbled shyly. She flicked her fringe out of her eyes and flashed me a friendly grin, "you're welcome!" She linked her right arm with mine confidently, and grabbed Mr.Potato from the ground with her other one, "best friend," she added happily. I frowned in confusion, "are you really my best friend?" She smiled warmly at me again, "of course! Now we are, so what's your name?"
"Freya," I replied, "what's yours?"
"Phoebe, Phoebe O'Sullivan."That was the first time we met. Nearly ten years ago.
