Alex's POV
I saw him across the courtyard and I got a weird feeling in my stomach. It was a feeling that was hard to describe. It's felt like I was on one of those rides where it drops you all of the sudden and it made me feel like I had to pee. He walked with such confidence. It was like he knew people were staring but he didn't care.
I was so focused on Jack that I didn't even realize my girlfriend, Taylor, was talking to me.
"Alex," she said while snapping her fingers in my face, "How do you think we should get to winter formal?"
Taylor and I had been dating since the middle of our sophomore year. She had shoulder length brown hair and the prettiest blue-green eyed I've ever seen.
"Oh sorry, I zoned out. What are my choices?"
"Well we can either do a limo or a party bus and I was thinking we could go with Caitlyn and Joe and Riley and Thomas."
I honestly didn't care who we went with or how we got there. Homecoming wasn't important to me but it was really important to Taylor, "I don't Tay," I said while putting my arm around her shoulders,"You pick." I kissed her forehead. She blushed.
I really cared for her but for the last few months it's like I love her, but I'm not in love with her.
Riley and Caitlyn walked over to us and said hi and good morning and all the usual greetings. They had picked Taylor up some iced coffee thing that she liked. Riley and I dated for a short two weeks when we were freshmen but there was nothing there anymore. She and Taylor looked like they could be sisters, but Taylor was more tan.
Caitlyn on the other hand had blonde hair and green eyes. Only about a year ago did she start wearing makeup and that's when she kind of became a pain in the ass. She was probably one of the prettiest girls in the school but also one of the bitchiest. That's what Taylor tells me at least. They are the three out of four of their little group. Everyone, except them, call them the core four.
They started talking about the previous night's homework and who had slept with who. I tuned them out. I could handle Taylor alone but with her friends everyone was a handful.
Jack was sitting on one of the benches outside of the school. He had reddish-brown hair and he was a runner so he was really lean. Today he was khakis and a blue hoodie. I watched him as he read his history text book. He was so confident.
About a month ago, he came out and told Tyler his best friend and Tyler spread that like a wildfire. Jack lost most of his guy friends but gained a few girl friends. He kept his composure through the whole thing though.
All or the sudden Joe took the book out of his hands. Joe was pretty tall, a bit taller than Jack, and he held the textbook above his head.
"Hey faggot. Oh I'm sorry we're you reading this?" He said tauntingly,"Oops." He said as he dropped the book in a puddle. "Go get it."
I saw Jack's jaw clench. He balled up his fists. I worked in the office and I had to organize files sometimes and I learned that Jack had Intermittent Explosive Disorder and had episodes of intense rage.
After a few seconds Jack walked over and picked up the book. "Thanks," he said through clenched teeth,"Dick" he muttered under his breath.
"What did you just say?" Joe said angrily.
My feet thought by themselves and suddenly I was standing between them. "Whoa whoa whoa, boys come on. Let's stop this before someone gets hurt." Jack looked really surprised, most likely because this was the first time I stood up for him. Joe on the other hand just looked severely pissed. I was taller than both if them but they were both intimidating.
I've known joe since third grade when I traded my pudding cup for a Capri sun with him. We've been best friends ever since.
"Alex what are you doing?" Joe asked.
"I'm stopping both of you from getting suspended, dumbass."
Three seconds passed and the Joe finally walked off to find Caitlyn. Jack kept staring at me. His brown eyes locked with mine. I never really took in his face before. He had a few freckles spattered on hit cheeks and nose, which was a little small.
"Be careful next time." I said warning him. He looked at me in shock. He probably though I was going to make some snarky remark or call him a fag.
I walked off and found Taylor and her friends. Joe had joined them and he and Caitlyn were flirting with each other. They had been on and off for two years and it was exhausting. He would try really hard to get her, but once he had her, he was a total douche and that cycle would repeat. She fell for it almost every time.
The bell rang and a sea of students flowed through the doors. As everyone walked in, Taylor pulled me back.
"Thank you for standing up for him, Alex. Joe was being a dick." She said.
"It was nothing," I brushed it off, "You know how Joe gets. Well we should head in." I said. And with that we walked into school.
