Ole Ben and I traveled down that road for hours on end. Eventually, the sky began to darken. The road before us went from a warm, summer colour to the black of night. At some point I felt Ben's hand twine around mine. It hadn't moved since.
For the last couple of hours I had been thinking of everything that happened when he had thought that I was dead. I remembered the look on his face when he thought that I was dead. I remembered the hunger, the agony, the fear, I remembered it all. And every single image haunted me.
"You're wondering about everything that happened, aren't you?"
I looked up at Ben's face. He looked impassive, but I could see the understanding in the lines of his face. He's always known somehow, I've never had to explain anything to him. I guess that's why we fit together so well.
I figured there was no point in lying to him.
"Yeah, I had been wondering about it."
Ben looked grim at the fact that I really had been alive the entire time.
"It's only because I wanted to understand, I wanted to know why you did what you did, Ben. You've never held anything back from me. Why now? What's happened to you?"
He looked off into the midnight coloured trees, darkened by the night and silhouetted bY the silver moon. "I had too."
"What did you have to do?"
"I had to keep you safe, Grace. You don't understand."
"And what do you think I'm trying to do, Ben? I'm trying to understand you! You have to let me!"
Ben turns to face me. There is no hint of understanding now. All I see is anger and frustration, fear and hunger. He's never looked at me with more than a hint of annoyance in his face.
Ben grabs me roughly by the arms and stares into my eyes. They're usually an evergreen colour, but now they're glowing. I watch in horror as they get lighter and lighter, until they are a fluorescent robin's egg blue.
I screamed and pulled away, begging for him to return to normal, for him to allow us to go back home. He didn't say a word, just went rigidly still with his hands clamped on my arms.
Then he was back a blink of an eye. Ben looked at me and smiled. I stared at him.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" he asked.
It was as if he couldn't remember anything that had just occurred. I just smiled and said that I'd thought that he'd had something on his face. He accepted my explanation with a nod and resumed walking.
I should've known that there was no way that the tranquility of the woods around us couldn't last all night long.
It happened at exactly 2:05 am, that very night.
