I take a seat next to Sophie. The meeting is about to start.

"Thank you everyone for coming today," begins Mayor Blur. "I'm so glad that y'all showed up. It's not like you had a choice though, right? Ah, always open with a joke is what I always say. Anyway, I want to start by talking about our elections for this year."

Elections! I finally get to vote! Wow. I can't believe I'm already fifteen. Sadly, I doubt Mayor Blur is going to be elected again if my mom really is running against him.

"Start thinking about who you want to elect, people! Here are the candidates. Me, of course, Dr. Travis Callaway, and Mrs. Joanna Smalls."

I knew it! My mom is running! But why didn't she tell me? At least I know who I'm voting for.

"Ok, now that we have done that, let's talk about Stomping Day. So, this year was the first year in about a century someone was left outside. I am proud to say that Sophie Griffin is okay and in this very building today. Why don't you stand up, Sophie? Just so everyone can see that you are okay."

She tries to shrink in the corner as everyone looks around.

"I don't think she wants to be put on the spot right now, Mayor Blur," I call out.

"No, don't be silly! She doesn't have to be shy! You know what? Why doesn't she come up to the front? Come on!"

She runs out of the hall.
Oh, I feel so bad for her. I can't imagine what she's going through.

"Alrighty then... We'll just continue with the meeting," Mayor Blur says awkwardly. "Everyone who lives in the east side of the village will work on the fences. That must be done as fast as possible."

I can't take it. I have to go after her. I'll just talk to my mom about the jobs later.

I sneak outside without being noticed. I hear something above me. I look up to find the most amazing thing I've ever seen in my entire life.
