Chapter 2
" where's your mom?" I asked. The older boy's upper lip curled up into a grimace. " we don't really have one. Got a foster mom though. She's no good. She's the reason I have these" he lifted his arms, indicating his wounds. I was horrified."she beats you?" He shook his head. "No, her boyfriend does though. He tries to beat Chris too but I protect him. He's my brother."
I nodded, I was furious that these boys weren't being treated well. "When's the last time you ate anything?" I asked. Hope shone on both their faces. "Last Monday, I think" said the older boy. I was shocked! Monday was almost a week ago. "Boys, do you want to leave this place. Go to a new home where you'll get three full meals a day, new clothes and other things?" The boys looked at each other. Hope and suspicion warred on the older boy's face. He nodded after a short time. "You going to take us to our social worker?" Asked the younger boy, Chris. "No, I'm going to take you to my home. If you want to come with me, then grab anything you want to bring with you." The boys nodded and raced into the house. I heard a shout echo through the house, then a yelp and a clatter. Then silence. About 10 minutes later, both boys came out, each holding a backpack. The older boy had a small, battered suitcase as well. He bore a fresh welt on his leg. "What happened?" " Steve was drunk, decided to go for Chris. I got in the way." Said the older boy.
I was angry but I had to get the boys away from this home before I could take action and see justice being done. I picked up the suitcase from the older boy and said" let's go, it's not really very far to go for us. You see that factory, across the meadow?" The boys nodded. "Well, I own that factory. My truck is there. Once we get there, I'll drive you to my home."
It took about 15 minutes to get the boys to the factory. Both were struggling on the last 50 feet or so. The guard raised the gate when he saw me but looked surprised to see the two boys trailing behind me. Then he smiled and nodded to me. I admit, I have a bit of a reputation for finding and caring for sick or injured animals. I've never taken in children before though. My mother did take kids in. I know, I was one of them. I came from an abusive situation and the woman I now call 'mother'. Took me in with about 6 other boys and girls and she raised us.
