Kane looked out the window of his wooden house and watched as his son ran about. Little Ray just turned seven and nearly had more energy than his twenty-six year old father. And running with Ray was Maya, a young girl of the same age, that Ray befriended in the village. Of course Falcon, Ray's two-year old dragon tagged along. It was always a joyous sight to see them having so much fun.
There was something that bothered Kane, however. As he watched the children, he realized that the time would come when Ray would have to face certain challenges: Darkai, a name given to the Mekai who have turned their lives over to the Darkness. Ray was special, and Kane knew it. As far as Nomekians go, "special" draws unwanted attention rather early. With a smile, he made up his mind that it was time to have "the talk" with Ray- the same talk all Nomekian parents have with their children.
"Hey, Ray," he called out through the door. "Why don't you come inside for a while? I promise you can go back out."
"Okay, Father!" young Ray answered. "See you in a little, Mai."
Ray raced back to the house and dashed past his father. "You should really slow down," Kane said with a laugh.
"Nuh uh! Not until I'm as fast as you!" Ray said, running around the room.
"Well, you will if you train real hard," Kane told him. "I need you to listen to me, Ray. I have something very important to tell you."
Ray settled down by sitting cross-legged on the floor. His young, wide black eyes shined with wonder as he looked at his father. One thing Kane was always proud of was Ray's eagerness and willingness to learn everything he could.
"Ray," Kane began. "What if I told you that you are part Egyptian?"
Ray's eyes stretched with excitement. "I am?!" he asked. "Am I really part Egyptian?"
"You are," Kane answered. "And so am I, and my mother before me, the Fenns; all the Mekai in the world- light and dark alike- are part Egyptian."
"How is that, Father?" Ray asked curiously.
"Do you remember who Acksun is?" Kane asked.
"Uh huh," Ray answered immediately. "He was the very first Mekai in the world. He had a brother named Zoksun, the Father of the Mekai."
"Very good, son," Kane said. "Do you know why Zoksun is crowned the 'Father of the Mekai?"
Ray shook his head. "Do you want to know why?" Kane asked.
"Yes!" Ray said, leaping up.
"Alright, alright," Kane said, laughing. "I'll tell you the story. It's a very important story that every young Mekai needs to know. So I need you to listen to me very carefully, okay?"
"Okay," Ray said with the biggest smile. Kane sat down next to Ray and little Ray rested his head against him. Kane put an arm around him and began to tell the tale:
"Now, to understand our history, you have to go back a couple thousand years. That's a long, long time ago. You have to go back to Egypt, a place that was slightly different than today. The pyramids were still young and the days were just as hot as always, and nights just as cold. There was a man by the name of Acksun-."
"The first Mekai!" Ray inserted.
"Yes, but he didn't start off that way. Acksun was once a normal man, just like people here in Knightly Village. One night, he was traveling in the desert when hundreds of stars rained from the sky. He felt a strange atmosphere, and those hundreds of stars headed straight for him."
"What happened?" Ray asked, curiously.
"They fell all around him. There was one of those stars though, straight in the middle, that hit Acksun directly. Now, any normal person would have been killed by that kind of impact, and Acksun nearly was. Somehow, he survived. Acksun was completely healed from the impact."
