Prologue
A creak, that's all it was. Nothing more, nothing less. One small noise, barely enough to disturb the substance it came from, but enough to send a chill through my core. My skin turned to metal, my blood became venomous, and my bones froze like cool stone. The saliva in my mouth was bitter, and my eyes stung while small tears pricked at the corners, since I wasn't blinking.
Everything was alive. The hum of silent wind became deafening, and my senses were fully attuned to the dangerous space around me. I was ready for anything. I could feel Matthew as if he were holding my hand, knowing fully that he was at least five or six metres away from me. My other hand suddenly clutched Ryan's, knowing that the one thing in that room I couldn't afford to lose from my sight or touch, was him.
And then, as my vice grip tightened around his wrist, I felt the air fly past my face.
