Cas hummed quietly to himself as he walked in the familiar woods, the very same woods that he grew up in. The basket that he was carrying in one arm swung with the movement, making the items that its holding move, making quiet bits of noise. Cas didn't notice, as he was too busy enjoying the perfect weather that the day has brought. He stopped by a blueberry bush an put the basket carefully on the ground, opening it to reveal many berries inside. He started to pick off the ripe berries off of the bush, safely putting them into the basket. Cas has been collecting berries all day, and this was his last bush before he was going to finish for the day.

He sighed as he tossed the last berry into the basket and stretched, yawning. Geez, who knew that collecting berries would be so tiring? He thought, rubbing the back of his neck. Maybe I should take a quick rest before I go home... Yeah, that sounds good.

He picked up the basket, closing it as he did so, and looked around for somewhere to rest. He spotted a nearby tree and walked over to it, setting his basket down by its roots and layed down in the grass, sighing as did so. The grass was surprisingly soft and felt comfortable laying in it. He looked up at the sky and closed his eyes, smiling softly to himself. I'll just take a quick rest, then I'll go home, since I wont take long... Yeah...

Cas awoke with a start, panting slightly and heart pounding. He looked around and was shocked to see that it was not daytime, but night. But that wasn't the only thing that shocked him.

It was the sound of growling.

Cas looked around hurriedly, seeing nothing, but then it happened again.

Another growl.

And another.

And they were coming closer.

Cas sprang up, grabbing the basket full of berries and ran back down the path that he came from earlier, his heart pounding with fear and sudden adrenaline.

He heard the growling come closer, its sound driving Cas to run faster, giving him hope that he was going to make it back home in time.

He was wrong.

Three wolves suddenly jumped out from the bushes in front of Cas, blocking his path. They growled at him, their white teeth flashing and their eyes full of murder. Cas, skidded and pelted in the other direction, hearing the loud barks and growling of the wolves behind him.

Two more wolves appeared in front of Cas, blocking his path once again. He looked around wildly before starting to run to the side, but stopped when he noticed the glowing eyes of two more wolves coming from that direction.

Panting, Cas slowly back up, looking at the seven wolves that had him surrounded him. He felt fear grip his heart, and tears gathered in his eyes. His back hit the rough bark of a tree, and he slowly slid down it, his eyes shut tight.

I'm going to die...

Cas heard a rustle behind him, then something sprang in front of him.

It was another wolf.

Its ears were aimed back, and a loud growl emitted from its throat, as if it was telling the others to back off.

And it was... Protecting him?

The others let out snarls and loud barks. The one in front of Cas growled louder, then barked, making Cas jump.

The others showed their teeth, and one launched itself at the one defending Cas, its teeth sinking into his shoulder.

And at that moment, Cas saw an opportunity to run, and took it. Staggering, he sprinted away from the situation. He glanced back to see the wolf that had interfered was now completely covered in wolves, and Cas heard loud yowls of pain along with growls and snarls.

I need to help it, but how?

An idea popped into his head.

The bat!

Panting, he approached the door to his home, and hurriedly opened it, almost falling as the door opened and Cas went inside, going over to the corner beside the door. There was the thick wooden bat that he had left in the cabin just in case of emergency.

Cas took a moment to catch his breath, before putting down his basket and picking up the bat, sprinting out the door and back into the woods, following the growing sounds of wolves fighting into the dark woods.

He reached the place again, and before he could think, ran up to one of them, hitting it aside. One launched at him and he also hit it aside, hearing it yelp in pain.

They all stared at Cas for a couple seconds, before retreating into the woods, the ones who got hit followed more slowly, one limping slightly as it walked.

Cas, panting from running and with swinging the heavy bat, glanced down at the wolf. HE didn't get to really look at it until now, or should he say, he.

The wolf had light brown hair, ears, and tail. His green eyes full of pain and anger, and his freckled face and arms were covered in blood from his mouth and from many scratches and bites. HE wore a black shirt with black shorts, which were a bit torn up. He looked up at Cas, and stiffened, backing up a bit.

"H-hey, I wont hurt you, see?" Cas put down the bat and kicked it away, smiling nervously at the wolf.

Why am I doing this?

The wolf looked at him, confused, before carefully walking over, sniffing the air.

I know what they did to my family.

Cas slowly squatted and put out a hand, making no sudden movements.

So why...?

The wolf slowly came closer, carefully sniffing Cas's hand, before suddenly head-butting it playfully.

Am I doing this...?

He laid down, panting a bit and whimpering in pain. Cas thought for a moment, before slowly reaching out and putting arm under him.

He growled at him, and Cas just stared at him. God, this is insane... Trying to pick up a wolf...

He slowly relaxed, whimpering. Cas continued to slowly pick him up, until he was holding the injured wolf bridal-style. He slowly walked back to his cabin, taking small glances at the injured wolf. Why am I doing this? I know what his kind did to my family back then, so why am I helping him? Why...?

Cas entered his cabin, closing the already-opened door behind him with a foot. He layed the wolf down on the couch and went to get the first aid kit.

I'm helping a wolf.
