Last Real Memory

Her eyes slowly began to open, she finally felt her hands at her side. Darkness clouded her mind and apparently her eyesight. She turned feeling pain in each side of her body. Groaning, she got up searching for a wall or some object to be her guide. Nothing. She stood in absolute darkness. “Hello?” She called out, hoping for a reply. She walked forward hoping there was nothing about to pop out. Suddenly a large screen appeared. The screen was just like the ones you see in a theater. She slowly backed away, then she realized this was the only light around here. The screen showed an image. She inhaled then froze. The image was her. Her long greasy brown hair, her chubby cheeks. It was definitely her. But this picture left her confused. She was asleep in a white gown in what looks like a hospital. By her bed was a vase with red, white, and pink roses inside. “What’s this?” She whispered, walking closer to the screen. There was an answer. “You” It stated. Her body felt uneasy as the voice echoed through the dark. “Where am I?” She drew closer her finger twitched. “You are where you are.” The voice called. She frowned. “I don’t understand.” A new figure came into view. She had light brown hair like her but she was smaller. Her eyes were a bright green. She wore a sad expression on her face as she approached her lifeless body. She was familiar. “I know her.” She told herself. “Then tell me who she is.” It said. Her head throbbed and ached trying to put the pieces together. She does know her, but who was she to her. She felt the headache grow stronger. The voice again stated, “Come close child, touch the screen, it will soon become clear to you.” She stared at the giant screen. Her hand withdrew from her side. Wait should I? Her mind ached but she needed an answer to soothe her head. She then placed her hand on the screen. There was a buzzing noise then a tingling sensation and suddenly she was in the room. “I miss you.” The small girl said. Her voice squeaked. “Mommy and Daddy. They said they weren’t coming back in awhile.” There was a long pause. She wanted to move but her body was frozen, numb. Mommy? Daddy? What is she saying? “Please, please, please wake up sissy. I need you.” Suddenly the buzzing noise returned then she was back in the dark her hand away from the screen. “Mommy. Daddy. Wait Mom and Dad! She was my sister! Lindsey!” She called out her head suddenly brought back memories. “Yes.” The voice said. “That is true, but where are you?” Her face grew hot. She was in the hospital. But why? “Before anything won’t you tell me your name.” She froze. My name? My name? I forgot my own name! Her face showed fear. “I…don’t know” She stuttered. At that moment she realized, she didn’t know anything. She stepped back only to trip on something. “Ouch!” Another voice called out. “Watch where you’re stepping!” She jumped. There on the ground lay a small figure. It was furry and had two big ears on its head. It had one button eye and the other was real. It was stitched together. “I’m sorry.” She replied examining the small furry object. “It’s fine. Goodness, why are you here?” It said getting up. “I don’t know, all I know is I have to find my mom and dad and my sister.” She continued her face in amazement. “What are you?” The doll squinted at me then turned crossing its arms. “I think you should remember since I was your favorite toy.” Her head started to ache again, the screen in front of them went black. Then it presented another image. It was her, she thought, this time she was as small as her sister and she was holding the doll that she accidently stepped on. But the doll was different, it had two button eyes and no stitches. The image showed her smiling then hugging the doll. “I think that was my fourth birthday?” Her face showed confusion. “That doll…I named him! Kit! You’re Kit!” She yelled pointing to the doll. The doll turned, a smile was shown on his face. “That’s right I’m Kit, so that means your Luna.” Kit said pointing to her.

“Luna?” She tried to remember, yet her mind felt scattered but then she saw it. “I am Luna.” Luna stared at the doll. “Kit. Where the heck am I?” She asked, squinting at Kit. Kit turned his big stuffed head, looking left then right. “Oh yeah, were on the border.” Kit replied suddenly walking away. “The border?” Luna said getting up following the small toy. “Yes. I don’t have the slightest clue why you’re here. All I know is I have to get you to Athena as soon as possible.” Kit said continuing to walk into the dark space. “How?” Luna stopped. “All there is, is just pitch black darkness.” Kit suddenly froze then punched his little paw to the ground. The ground shook. She fell back her eyes darting all directions. The black darkness started to fade. Luna looked to her side, grass suddenly began to grow between her fingers. Flowers, blue, red, purple even colors she knew weren’t flowers. The flowers grew larger and larger before they outgrew her. Trees sprouted from the grass towering over them like a building. She sat there dumbfounded. “What’s the matter?” Kit said curiously as his little body turned to her. “What, Where, Huh?” Luna blabbered not taking in what just happened. Kit’s small body came to her tugging on the fabric of her dress. “Come on. Athena is waiting.” Luna didn’t know what to think. “Wait. I’m not going anywhere until you tell me what’s going on” She said crossing her arms. “Look Luna. Athena will explain everything, I promise.” Kit replied, apologetically. Something about that word, Promise, rang a bell. She had no choice. He was her stuffed teddy, she had to trust him. “Fine.” Luna said, getting up. Her toes wiggled as the grass came between them. Kit’s stitched mouth pulled a smile. His small paw held out to her. She wrapped her fingers around the small paw. They ran through the strange land. Under flowers, over mushrooms, climbing trees. “ There” Kit whispered to himself. His small paw pointed to towers. The towers were rusted and from where they were she could see a chunk from a tower falling apart. Luna pursed her lips wanting to say something. But she felt the happy atmosphere starting to fade. In the distance the tall flowers began to wither away. The grass was replaced with black dirt. The trees were chopped and stacked neatly everywhere. They continued through the unpleasant sight till they reached the fallen towers. Luna glanced down at Kit who was still holding her hand. They finally approached a long gate. Two towering doors stood in front of them. “Who goes there!” A voice barked behind the door. Luna held her breath for a moment, the voice startled her. “It’s me. I’ve returned from the border. I have Luna.” Kit yelled back. His voice sounded loud for a tiny bear. The two doors slowly opened, a loud creak came from it. Luna was surprised. The land before her was nothing she expected. The towers up close were rusted and some were on the verge of falling. There were people, wait no. Luna saw a man with hands on his waist, a woman with no eyes and was stitched together, like Kit. She brought her hand and clutched it over her chest. “What happened here.” Luna said glancing at the people who stopped and gazed before her. Kit said nothing and continued to walk forward. She caught up to him. The atmosphere started feeling heavy as she passed the deformed and stitched people. All their eyes were upon her. Their glassy eyes peering into her. She decided to close her eyes only to shut them out. Bad idea. Luna tripped it sent her forward and all the deformed people gasped. Her face flushed with embarrassment. Kit quickly turned to her his tiny body at her side. Kit looked upon her red face then yelled, “Everyone return to your duties. All because she’s here doesn’t mean you stop working!” At the moment they all returned to walking passed her. No eyes stared at her at that point. She swallowed then got up, following Kit once again.
