CHAPTER FOUR

“Hey man!” Toby greeted Daren after school.

“ What’s up?”Ryder teased. “Got the girl?”

“Yeah, dude, you’re beaming like your mama just bought you a ticket to Mars,” Ben joked.

  Daren laughed.

“Yep. I got her, guys and I got her cell phone number.”

  The guys cheered and laughed.

“Wait. Which girl?”Mike asked.

“Ashley. She’s a new girl.”

Mike nodded. He wasn’t into-the-girls type but Mike new that Ashley was a Catholic or Baptist or something like that. Did Daren know? He probably didn’t. She’s cute alright, thought Mike, but if Daren knew who she actually was, he would try to reject her right away. What cool guy would go out with a preacher?

~There’s something about the sunshine, baby! I’m seeing you in-~

“Hey Mom.”  Daren answered his phone and walk a few feet away from the group.

“Honey, is that you? Listen, I want you to go home now.”

“What? Why? I’m busy right now!” He said, frustrated.

“Hanging out with the guys isn’t busy, Daren and besides your father came from his trip.”

“Oh great,” grumbled Daren.

“What’s that?”

“I’ll be there.”

“Okay. Bye, hon.”

Daren touched the End button on the screen. He grunted. Ugh! Dad went on his “business” trips often and when he came back it would come to an end to hanging around and just chilling. And he couldn’t forget the life-isn’t-just-about-chilling-and-being-cool lecture. He joined the group.

“You’re dad’s home?” asked Mike seeing Daren’s grim expression.

  He nodded.

“We’re kinda planning on going swimming today,” added Toby.

“Sorry, man.” Ryder patted him on the shoulder.

“I don’t need your stupid pity.” Daren grumbled in return. “Hey Ben, can I use your bike to ride home? I’ll bring it to you tomorrow or Monday at school. I really don’t wanna take a bus.”

“Sure.”

Daren hopped on Ben’s blue BMX. The bike was pretty cool and the coolest one in school. Ben was a bike freak. He wasn’t so good at skateboarding tricks but he was amazing at BMX tricks. That kid was cool. He would fit for a gang leader some day, thought Daren with a proud smirk. But, he wouldn’t be able to be better than me. He pedaled home.

Daren got to the big house and glanced at his dad’s BMW. Awesome. The car was fascinating…not like his dad. He parked the bike in the opened garage and walked into the house.
