BBBRRRIINGGG! BBBRRRIINGGG! Allison sat up groggily and rubbed her eyes. She glanced at her clock. It read 6:40, as it always did. Today, however, Allison didn't mind the early time. It was her birthday! She leapt out of bed, humming. She quickly threw on a Pittsburgh Pirates sweatshirt and a pair of jeans to protect her from the cold Pennsylvania January. Allison ran recklessly down the spiral staircase into the kitchen. Her parents and younger brother Mathew were already down there, gobbling up chocolate chip pancakes. "There's the birthday girl!" Her dad said, smiling. Allison grinned back, grabbing a chocolate chip pancake. Mathew started singing, "Happy birthday to you! You live in a shoe!" Allison glared at him. He gave a snaggle-toothed smile back.  "Mathew, go get your habitat diorama," Allison's mom commanded.  Mathew went up to his room grumbling.  "So, Ms. twelve year old," her mom continued.   "How does it feel?" Allison shrugged, "No different, really. Well, It will when I get that special gift you've been telling me about!" Her mom chuckled. "Well, you're not going to get it until after school," Allison's dad broke in. Allison groaned exaggeratedly. Her dad laughed, "Run along, little girl!"  Allison smiled at him, grabbing her backpack and ran out the door to catch her bus.
