Great Protector

the night was like any other night in a way for a stray like me every night seemed the same just trying to survive to the next day in these cold back alleys but I didn't mind life had always been like this for me since the day I was born I never had a home or a family to belong to its not as if I was a bad dog or anything its just that no one ever gave me a chance they would just see me on the streets and just keep walking by as if I was invisible and sometimes I just gave up hope that anyone would ever want me it wasn't because I was a mutt or anything or had any diseases because as far as I know I was a pure breed german shepherd and as healthy as the next dog but I guess that wasn't good enough for some people or maybe they just didn't have enough time for a dog so in a way I couldn't blame them. then all of the sudden I heard a strange noise like crying at first I thought it might have been a puppy that had gotten lost from its mother and I don't know I guess my maternal instincts or something kicked in and I started looking for where that crying was coming from at last I located it near a garbage bin but when I got near it found out what I had once thought to be a puppy was a human baby I couldn't believe it how could a human baby have gotten here after I got over the shock all that went through my mind was how can I get help for this baby because I had no idea how to take care of a baby and I know that if I tried to get someone's attention they would just try to shoo me away. just then I saw a policeman and a police dog across the street and that's when I knew that I needed any kind of help they could provide it so I ran across the street as fast I could because the sooner I got the baby help the better when I got to where they were I noticed something I hadn't noticed before there before me stood the most intimidating doberman I had ever seen I just got this sudden flash of fear but I knew I had to get the baby help so I gathered up my courage and tried to get his attention. "Hi can you follow me I need your help." But I got no answer from him "hey! I need your help I found a human baby and I don't know what to do with it." I don't know if it was the fact that I had yelled at him or the part about the human baby I had found but all the sudden I had his full attention "just let get my handler's attention" and with three short barks he got the policemans attention as soon as he did I lead the way to where I had found the baby to say the policeman was shocked was an understatement as soon as he saw the baby he picked it up and checked to see if there was anything wrong with it when he saw that there was no apparent damage to the baby he took off his radio and called the police station about an abandoned baby when he hung up he called me to him but I was afraid no human had ever noticed me he noticed I wouldn't let him get near me so he called the police dog over "Salvatore tell its okay I won't hurt her I just want her to come with us to the station we could use protective instincts like hers". the first thing that ran through my mind was his names Salvatore the Italian meaning for savior how befitting seeing as how he just saved me from not knowing what to do with this human baby then I stopped to think wait did he just say to go with them did that mean I finally had a place to belong "hey are you coming with us or not". said Salvatore as I looked up I finally got a good look at him under the lamplight his black coat was so black it looked blue in some places and his brown eyes looked so kind that my heart skipped a beat at that moment but then I thought about how I must have looked to him a dirty stray but I just put that aside I had a decision to make one that might change my life forever. when I came to my decision I was sure that I had made the right decision "yes I am." So I followed Salvatore and the policeman to the police car to go to the station.
