Third Person POV

"I would like to have all the students and staff members' attention. With great sorrow, I convey the news that a fellow student, Kayrito Lester, is no longer with us. There will be a special assembly held in his remembrance next period. " The manly voice of the Canyon View High School's principal boomed through the empty corridors and the silent classrooms.

The news itself was shocking. Most teachers and students went into still motion after hearing such wretched news. A few seconds later, murmurs erupted through the classes. While most students were busy comprehending the news of death, 5 faces stood out in particular. They were all lost in their own thoughts. While most students' expression mirrored a hint of sadness and disbelief, the 5's expression were blank.

The school rang, indicating the start of next period. The classrooms emptied as students poured out in the corridors, making their way to the hall, in order to pay respect to Kayrito Lester.

"Everyone please be seated quietly. The service will commence in 5 minutes."Vice Principle, Mrs Smith's voice echoed in the hall, efficiently silencing all students.

Precisely 5 minutes later the service began. "We are all gathered here to pay our respects to fellow student, Kayrito Lester. He was a star student, acing in every aspect at school. Whether it was academically, sports or extra circular activities, you could count on Mr. Lester to bring pride to our school. His peers loving called him 'Kay'."

"But Miss I doubt he had any friends!" The speech was interrupted by a voice from the crowd of students. A round of faint laughter followed the rude comment made by the anonymous student. "Quiet everyone!" barked Mrs. Smith. "If you could not utter a nice word for him during his year at this school at least show him some respect when he is not with us anymore. In many aspects he was better than you ever will be in your life" Mrs. Smith continued her outburst with her gaze transfixed on the spot where the comment came from but not being able to pin-point the exact student who had said the comment.

Rest of the service went as peacefully as it could. The earlier outburst had seemed to make all the students uncomfortable.

"Now concluding the service, I would like to inform all the students that Lester family will not be holding a funeral as of now and they would like some peace themselves following this saddening event. So it is suggested that no one should disturb the Lester family through this tough time and show support by leaving them alone. Thank you all for your cooperation. The school will end early today. After this you can all go home." Mrs Smith smoothly concluded the service with a honey coated voice.

All students quickly got up and within few minutes they had all dispersed to their respective lockers. Teachers stood quietly observing the happy students who were not remorse about the news they had just heard. Instead they were celebrating the news of school finishing early.

Among the line of grey lockers, 5 stood out. They all had an envelope sticking out. The respective owners of the locker were too engrossed in a world of their own to notice anything as they slowly walked. That is, until they opened the locker and the envelope floated, softly landing on the tiled floor. Each one of the student picked up the envelope and examined it. It was a plain white envelope with their names handwritten in cursive writing. The students looked around their surrounds to see if other students had received an envelope similar to theirs. But the corridors where now empty as majority of students had already left the premises.

But surely enough each student did observe 4 other students who were also holding an envelope similar to their own, mirroring the confused expression.  But upon noticing other students holding the similar envelopes, all suspicious thought were thrown aside.

Opening the letter, the 5 students read the same message

Due to the sad news about the fellow student, school will remain closed for the whole day. But today's cross country practice would take place in the old gym at 5.00pm. Be prompt.

-    Coach

Upon reading the content of the letter, a sense of relief spread through them. What harm could cross country practice bring? What the five failed to notice was could cross country practice ever be held in gym? And given that it would be the old gym that has not been in use for last 5 years.  Little did they know an adventure waited for them.
