Tears stung my eyes it was so windy. The whirring, whipping sounds forced us to have to use the hand signals we learned in basic training.
I glance at our small formation we gathered in such a small amount of time. Calum and Kyle were beside me, David led us, while Sam and Wes trailed us and the other able bodied people were on lookout or staying inside locking things down.
Taking another deep breath and wishing I would have worn a jacket over my tank top, I continue to glance around. Something in the far right corner of my eye catches my attention.
I wave a hand to get someone's attention and we struggle to see whatever lies beyond the trees.
Whatever it was, they must have either lay down or hid. I take a shallow breath.
All so suddenly, the stench of thick smoke infiltrates my nostrils and I begin to choke on it.
The others notice as well and we are forced to follow David's signals to retreat back indoors.
We run in a straight line the best we can in the hazy air. Tears roll from my cheeks from not only the harsh wind conditions but the smoke as well.
After sprinting in the wrong direction a few times, we finally make it back to the door and they open the door after merely a few seconds. I fall to the ground as soon as they close the door behind us. While everyone is choking we barely notice the crowd around us.
"We changed our minds." Marcus states. Everyone from inside the bunker is dressed in our combat gear and even has face paint. They each have a loaded backpack and guns strapped across their shoulders. Even the once frail Liam is equipped with a camouflaged face and a small rifle.
Calum and I exchange a glance and a determined smile spreads across my face.
"Go and grab the backpacks in the cafeteria for you all. Well make a break for the vehicles and come back with the ones who are participating in combat." Katie says.
Toby and Spencer who must have been in the controls room appear in the doorway in the same getup. "The rest of them are crossing the bridge to come up the mountain." Toby breaks the news.
"Let's do this." Spencer says, a determined smile that seemed to lighten the mood of us all is plastered across her face.
After running to get the survival bags and lugging the huge bags of ammo and a few more guns to the trucks, we send the first vehicle away with a CB radio to contact us. Ferra, Liam, Katie, Marcus, and their children are in this truck.
That leaves the rest of us to fight. We gather back in the vault to kill some time and plan before they all get here.
I walk back to my room, reminiscing over Alison's things and the life I thought that we would have here. I thought that it would be horrible, boring, repetitive. If only I knew.
A knock on my door tells me someone wants in. I compose myself and tell them to come in. None other than Calum Hood is standing in the doorway.
"Nice face paint."
"Thanks." He says. "I can do yours too if you want." He smiles nervously.
"Are you okay?" I ask. He seems on edge about something that is probably today's mission but it might not be.
"No. Carter.."
"What?"
"I like you. Like you, like you."
"Oh."
"Wasn't it obvious?"
I think to myself for a few short seconds. I hadn't even noticed. I thought Cal was just being his normal goofy and egotistical self.
Over the course of these few months, I hadn't even of thought of Calum that way. There had been too much going on. Nonetheless, it excited me. Calum Hood likes me. Likes me? Why would anyone say that unless it was some sick joke my brother put them up to. That has happened before. Although Calum doesn't seem like the type..
"This isn't time for joking." I roll my eyes. I have better things to do then listen to someone try to make a joke out of this.
"I'm not joking. I've liked you since that night we sat by the creek on the way here. You're the most gorgeous person I've ever seen, not to mention your taste in music and your style. You're so brave and I admire you for that. I wish the stupid world wouldn't have ended so I could take you on a date."
He stepped closer, my heart raced. I suddenly wonder if he can hear my pulse beating through my chest.
"5 minutes!" I hear a distant voice yell from somewhere inside of here.
"Looks like we have to go." I nod toward the door.
"Wait, Carter."
"Yeah?" I turn around and he's standing right in front of me for what seemed like an eternity before he smashes his lips onto mine, kissing me and sending small volts of electricity through me. I pull away not knowing what to do. Then I smile awkwardly, biting my lip.
"Let's go." I grab his hand and my gun and we walk out of my room and into the hallway. Suddenly I'm more than ready for whatever might happen.
