Can i sit with you?

Lunchtime.
My aim is to get my food and sit down and eat without disturbing many people and making any enemies on my first day.
I got my food and scanned the cafeteria looking for somewhere to sit.
Let's see, jocks... No. Preppy annoying girls... Nope, group of people staring right at me... No.
I kept looking until finally I spotted a table with one small, skinny girl sitting at it, "might as well try" I whispered to myself as I walked over to the table.
"Hi, I'm Esme, I'm new here, is this seat taken?"
The girl responded "hi! I'm Katie, no no! Feel free, I usually sit alone anyways, everyone here is so mean and stupid, it's much better when it's just me"
"I know! I've been here a few hours and I've received about 100 death glares from mostly everyone I've walked past, thank you"
The girl seemed and looked nice, she has short brown hair clipped back with bobby pins and was wearing a long pink dress, with light makeup applied on her face.
"So, what brings you to little brook high seven months into term time?"
She said as she sweetly smiled.
"I've was home schooled by my father up until now, but sadly, he passed away and my auntie cannot afford to pay for me to be home schooled by anyone else, so I had to move to public school and this one is the closest to my house"
The girls face dropped at the mention of my fathers death.
"Oh, I'm sorry about your father, that must be hard, I can't imagine losing a family member, especially a parent"
Just as I was thinking of something appropriate to respond with, the bell rang, meaning that third period was here.
"You can come sit with me tomorrow if you'd like?"
"I'd love that!" I responded as I grabbed my bag and rushed to biology.
