It's been 9 months since it happened. 9 painful and agonising months alone. 9 months without him. You're probably wondering how I'm coping. Well, I'm not. I am currently holed up in the darkness of my room and the comfort of my bed, doing what I had now become an expert at. Crying. I was just about to carry on with this very delicate, but simple task when the curtains are flung open and light streams in every corner of the windows.

I let out a deep and long groan and buried myself deeper into the warmth of my covers. "Come in Sue. Time to get up" my sisters soft voice said. "Go away" was my only reply back. "That's not very nice" she countered back sitting at the foot of the bed and tickling my feet. "No stop." I whined. "Nope. Not until you get up." She deepened her tickling. "Well, I'm not getting up so you can go on tickling me" it was now my sisters turn to groan. "Alright fine. In gonna run to the store quickly and when I get back I expect you to be up and out of bed." My sister instructed. I kept quiet. "Oh and there's lunch in the fridge. Just warm it up" she came over and gave me a kiss before leaving, shutting the door behind her.

Sometime around 5 I got up and went into the kitchen. I looked in the fridge and found some lasagne in there. I took the foil secured around it and carried it to the microwave. Wait...I don't have a microwave. I never bought one. I left the lasagne on the counter and trudged back to bed.

"Hey. Noo. Why aren't you up yet?" My sisters voice said. "I did. But then I came back" I replied with my eyes closed. "Well did you at least eat?" She asked. "No microwave" I whispered. "What?" She asked. "No microwave" I said louder. My eyes were open now and I saw how confused she looked. "I don't own a microwave. So I couldn't warm the food up" I elaborated. "Oh. Well why didn't you just buy one?" She asked sincerely. "Because...he was supposed to get one the day he...he..." I didn't have to finish the sentence or say his name because she knew what and who I meant. "Aw Suzie. I'm so sorry. I don't know. How about I get one for you. Ok?" She gave me a hug. "Ok." I replied. "I think we should just get takeaway today instead. That sound good?" I repeated my previous answer. "Ok. Where are the menus?" She asked. "Second cupboard on the right" she followed my instruction.

She came back in, a handful of menus in her hand. "We could have Chinese, or pizza, maybe Indian. Oh burgers." She said excitedly. "Ooohhh. Says here that if you spend £7 or more you get a free milkshake. They have strawberry, vanilla, they even have pineapple flavour. Oh Oreo flavoured!!" That name made me look up now. "We should get an Oreo flavoured milkshake." She said. "I don't want a milkshake" I whispered. "Come on. You love them. They're your favourite!" She egged on. "I DONT WANT A MILKSHAKE!" I shouted staring at her square in the eyes. She put her hands up in defence. "Ok we don't have to." Feeling guilty I said that I was sorry. "It's fine. What do you want instead?" She asked. "Water" she nodded and went into the kitchen to call up the takeaway guys, leaving me to my thoughts.

A couple of weeks later I had discarded my position for the last couple of months and was now sat cross legs on the bed. My sister suddenly walked in. From the look on her face I could tell that she was expecting to find me under the covers. "Oh. You're up. Good" she sat on the bed, more like jumped on it. "So what do you wanna do today?" She asked. "Today would have been our first year anniversary" I stated ignoring her question. I watched the look on her face change from excitement, to shock, to sadness. "I'm so sorry. I forgot" she said nearly in tears. "It's ok" I tried consoling her. "I would have too, but..." I handed her my phone that was in my hands. She turned it on, her eyes growing wide not long after. "My phone reminded me" I finished. "Well we need to celebrate" she said. The excitement returning to her face. "What? No. I'm not in the mood." I said, attempting to get into my covers. "Not in the mood? It's your anniversary. We're celebrating!" She commanded. "Noo..." I groaned. "Drake would want us to."

This statement caused me to sit still. It was the first time that she had said his name since it happened, the first time that anyone, including myself, had said his name since that day. "I can't..." I whined, fighting back the threatening  tears. "Why not?" It was such a simple question but the answer terrified me. "B b because I didn't say 'I love you' back, Lu." A tear rolled down my eyes. "I was so sure that he would get well, that we'd have time and I could say it then, but we didn't and he never knew..." I was crying now. "Noo. Suzie." Lu said back, hugging me. "He knew that you loved him. Of course he did. How could he not?" She rubbed small circles on my back. "I think we should go somewhere" I was groaning again. "Drake wouldn't have wanted you to spend you guys' anniversary holed up in a dark room. And you know it." She was right. I did know it and because of that reason I had to do it. Do it for him. I nodded. "Great. Let's get you cleaned up then." She pulled me towards the bathroom.

"We're here" I looked up and out of my window at the big, black metal gates. "Here" I took the flowers that Lu held out to me. "I'll wait here" she finished. I nodded and got out the car. I walked up to the gates and looked at the sign: Birking Cemetery. Taking a deep breath, I pushed it open and walked in. When I reached Drake's grave, I dropped to my knees. "Hey. Sorry I haven't been in a while. I've been...busy." I lied. Then I remembered what he'd once told me and chuckled. "You can probably tell that's a lie, right?" After a pause I started again. "It's our anniversary today. June 28th. So happy one year anniversary. Guess where I went to celebrate." No reply. "Lu took me to Make A Shake. And I ordered an...an Oreo flavoured milkshake. Large of course." I stopped not knowing what else to say. So I said the one thing that was bugging me. The one thing that I never had the chance to tell him. "I love you too. So much...and I'm glad I had you in my life." I put the flowers down and stood up. "I'll come visit soon...I promise."

I was about to leave when I noticed a figure in the bushes up ahead. It was staring towards me. I turned around to check if there was someone behind me. No one. I turned back around and the figure was gone. Great, now grief is making me imagine things. I turned and walked towards the exit, not looking back again. "You ok?" Lu asked when I got in the car. "Yeah" I replied. She gave me a sad smile and started the engine. And with that we drove away.
