"Food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food," Niall sang along to the tune from the Adventurous Adventures of One Direction.
"Niall, shut up!" Zayn, Louis, and Harry all called out at once.
"What? Haven't you lads seen The Adventures Part 2 yet?" From my seat in the corner of the booth, I could see all the guys shake their heads. "Well I have a girl-friend in it," Niall continued, smirking proudly. "So does Harry. Ironic, huh? The two 1D lads without girlfriends have girlfriends in the cartoon?" Niall laughed.
"Hey, I may be single right now, but that may all change soon," Harry said, winking flirtatiously at me. Even though I knew he was just joking, I still squirmed in my seat uncomfortably.
"No. No, no, no. Harry, I love you, but stay away from her. You wouldn't let anyone date Gemma, so you can't date Cameron," Liam defended.
"Relax, mate. I was just joking. I'm sorry for making you feel uncomfortable or anything," Harry apologized. I nodded, letting him know it was all okay. I knew it. Whether he was joking or telling the truth, who could ever love someone like me?
Hideous.
Fat.
Useless.
Stupid.
Pathetic.
The list never seemed to end.
Before I could do something I'd probably regret, I pushed aside the thoughts and listened in on the story Danielle was telling.
"Hey, I'm Charlene, and I'm going to be your server today. Can I get you guys something to drink?" The boys all ordered various drinks, ranging from soda to lemonade. I ended the list with a water. Charlene nodded and walked away, her waist-length blonde hair swaying along down her back.
The others all resumed their conversation, and I pretended to listen, not wanting to seem awkward to uninterested. I laughed when the others did and smiled, feigning interest. Charlene came back five minutes later, carrying a tray laden with all of our drink orders. "Here you are. All you all ready to order?"
The boys all nodded and ordered burgers and various pasta dishes. When it came around to me, I requested a salad with no dressing. Charlene nodded once again, scribbling the order on her notepad. As she collected our menus, she locked eyes with mine for a second. Where did I know those baby blues from? She gave me a small smile and then rushed away to do her job before anyone noticed our brief connection.
I sat back and leaned my head against the back of the booth. The coolness radiating off the seat seemed to transfer to my head, and I almost sighed in relief. "You okay, Cam?" Louis whispered into my ear.
I nodded. "Yeah, I just have to go to the bathroom."
"Course. Harry, scoot yo boot! Cammie has to go to the restroom!" Louis screamed into Harry's ear. Harry flinched and muttered a very colorful word under his breath before shuffling out of the booth. The walk to the bathroom was like a maze with the constant weaving in between tables and chairs. The diner was old-fashioned, and very cramped, but I suppose that's a diner characteristic. Booths lined the walls, making it even harder to find the concealed bathroom. I was just about to give up when I found the door labeled for bathrooms. I did my business and was washing my hands when a familiar blonde walked in.
"Cammie?" Charlene asked, pushing some of her long hair behind her ear.
"Yeah?" I responded, maybe a little nervously. Why did our waitress come to talk to me in the diner bathroom?
"Hey, do you remember me? Charlene? Charlene Powers? Gabe's ex? We went to high school together before you left," she said, trying to jog my memory. My eyes widened, and I slowly nodded. I remembered Charlene.
