"Ready to go home?" I asked Emmie who was sitting on the side of her hospital bed, looking down at her feet. Once I spoke, she looked up at me, biting her lip before nodding slightly.
I turned around with a small smile and gathered our bags and heard Emmie mutter, "I just hope I can remember it." My smile fell slightly and I gently rubbed her shoulder as an attempt to comfort her.
"Steven," I heard Lauren say, so I turned around to face her. She gestured for me to come over to wear she was standing with one of the nurses.
Nodding, I made my way over as the nurse started to speak. "The doctors told me to inform you that fortunately, Emerson will slowly regain her memory. If you are patient, eventually she'll be mostly back to normal." The nurse explained. "You can leave right after you check out of the front desk." She gave us a small smile before walking out of the room.
"Time to go, Em," I said, Emmie turning slightly to look at Lauren and I.
"Okay," Emmie mumbled with a sigh. Over the past week, she had barely been happy at all. She wouldn't laugh, wouldn't smile, wouldn't do anything that showed even the slightest bit of happiness. She felt like it was her fault that she couldn't remember anything.
I then felt a small tug on my pant leg, making me look down to see Caiden standing up, hugging my leg. "Hey bud." I picked him up, tapping his nose gently. "Can you go to mommy for a second?" I asked, earning a cute nod from him. Lauren then took CJ from me before quickly kissing my lips.
"I'm gonna go check out real quick," she said, her lips still close to mine. "Maybe you should talk to her?" We both glanced back at Emmie who was still staring at the ground.
"Yeah," I sighed, pushing my head forward slightly to connect our lips again.
After Lauren left, I went over to the window where Emmie was standing.
"The nurse had good news," I started, looking down at her while she still stared out the window. "She said you'll slowly get your memory back."
"I feel like a complete idiot," Emmie stated, looking at me briefly before turning back to look at the window, concentrating on all cars moving on the road below. "I can't remember anything."
I pressed my lips together in a straight line, not knowing how to respond, so all I said was, "C'mere." I reached my arms out to Emmie, picking her up. She instantly started to cry after wrapping her arm and legs around my neck and waist, burying her face into my shoulder. I wasn't supposed to be picking up much because of the wound in my chest that had almost healed, but I didn't care, Emmie needed me.
"I promise you'll be okay," I said soothingly, my hand on the back of her head. "You've made it this far, so I know you have more fight in you."
With that, I walked out of the hospital room with Emmie still in my arms, heading down to the lobby where Lauren would be waiting.
°•°Emmie's POV°•°
Shapes. Blurry shapes.
That's all that I could see.
My vision blurred in and out, so I could barely tell what was going on. A lair of dryness coated my mouth as it hung open, my whole right side and right cheek pressed against a rough, hard surface. Even when I tried to move, something in my body wouldn't let me, as if it was refusing to let me even close my mouth. All I could feel was complete pain in my stomach, coated with a layer of something warm and wet.
Blood.
Suddenly, the blurry figures began to move and get bigger, like they were slowly coming closer and closer to me. Then, they stopped, allowing my eyes to somewhat process what the figure was...or who. The person stared down at me, a blank expression on their face.
