Sirius is the brightest star in the Canis Major (Great Dog) constellation, meaning dog star. This is just a description of him. The brightest star is what his parents wanted him to be, a bright Slytherin. Instead he became a brave Gryffindor, shining in his own way. Shining in quidditch and schoolwork, and always spitting a great line. Later when remus thought he was a killer he could still see the good shining through on the Shrieking Shack at Harrys third year. Sirius suffered a lot but he always shined, and then when he died the light in his eyes disappeared too fast. Because he was like that. Too much. Too rebellious, too vulgar, too brave, too dangerous, too nice, too risky. Everyone saw him in his own way. Only his deepest friends loved him for who he really was. A bright star ready to live life to the fullest. Because he was like Black refers to him being a black dog, or that many accuse him of being a dark wizard. His name means that he can always make the "I'm serious/Sirius" pun.

In mythology, Remus, together with his twin Romulus are the founders of Rome. I think this means he can do great thing, but with the help of friends. He made the marauders map together with his friends at Hogwarts. He fought evil together with friends in the Order of the Phoenix. Then a great part of his life he lived without friends, when James and Peter are dead and Sirius a criminal. We see him broken down and tired. He is weak without his friends. Later he meets Harry and Sirius again and his old order of the phoenix friends and he finds Tonks, his new twin. Lupin means wolf, referring to that he is a werewolf.

James means supplant, Potter is a man who makes pottery. These two definitions suggest that James is ordinary, and can be replaced. His life is both proving it and proving the opposite. In one way he is ordinary, it's in a good way. He has a good childhood and everything at Hogwarts is fine. He is not a part of the famous purebred families. He is a regular boy. But also he is special. A lot of people on Hogwarts know his name. He is a very skilled wizard who is a great quidditch player and later becomes an auror. And he can not be replaced. Remus and Sirius knows this more than anyone else. But everyone misses him. Harry, Hagrid, Dumbledore, Minerva. "Potter's field" refers to cursed land or cemetery, this cursing James with an early death.

Peter means stone. It is ironic, because stone often refers to loyal. He is certainly not loyal to his friends betraying them and killing them. But it can also refer to his feelings, joining Voldemort he became cold as stone. Pettigrew means small man. Small man refers to Peter being short. But also he has always felt small and unimportant compared too Sirius, Remus and James. He wanted to be something more. He is not brave in the same way as they are, he is small and scared.
