This book takes place (mostly) in 2010 which is two years before "The Evil Inside", so Kate and Michael are only 15-years-old.
Chapter one is another flashback to 1865 and is more foreshadowing of Kate's future (or past!)
Chapters 2-4 are also flashbacks, but just 16 years earlier (1994) where we meet Mr. Huang, Yi Huang, Lily Ford, Malachi, and Semelia (also known as Faith) . The Huangs are Chinese and Yi's name is pronounced in English as "yee".
Near the end of chapter 1 we're introduced to Kate's cousin, Chris Cappelletti, who is also 15 years-old. She was adopted as a baby and becomes obsessed with finding her birth mother. During their summer together Kate suggests to Chris that Jonah can help her. She tells Chris that Jonah "...is very good at finding people".
Will the girls convince Mr. Fortress to help Chris? How far will their search take them if he does help? What dark secrets does Chris's past hold? Are they prepared to face the consequences if they do find her birth-mother, and will it drive a wedge further between her and her parents?
Some of the themes to look for are: redemption, adoption, and sacrifice. Watch also for my uses of , juxtaposition, symbolism, and irony.
Key verse: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33 kjv
