The hospital is huge. My friendship circle is small. The chances of me running into Callum were small but the world decided to make that chance of me running into him happen. And of course I literally bump into him. He holds onto my shoulders and looks down at me.
"Funny seeing you he--" I put my hand to his mouth."Don't." I say with a smile. I can feel his smile blossom under my hand. I remove my hand and see his wide smile. I slide past him and walk over to the food line. He follows like a lost puppy. I can practically hear his tail wagging.
"I've never actually gotten to know anything about you." He says out of no where. I grab a chocolate pudding and walk farther down a line. I slip past an old woman who's having trouble grabbing some milk.
"Excuse me." I say quietly. I don't look anywhere, but forward. I turn around when I hear the woman's voice.
"Thank you." Callum is holding the woman's tray with one hand and has the other wrapped around her arm. A nurse comes over and takes the woman from Callum's grasp. I walk over to a small counter in the corner with silverware, napkins, sauces, and straws. I grab a spoon and try to slip out of the cafeteria before Callum catches me.
"Do you have any siblings?" Of course he finds me. I turn and look at him.
"Do you?" I ask. He shakes his head and looks down.
"My mom got cancer when I was two and wasn't able to have anymore children. I wish I did have a sibling though." He says with a sad smile. I sigh, feeling guilty that I have a sibling that would probably be better with him. At least he doesn't bring up the fact that I never answered his question. We reach the doors to the cafeteria.
"I have to go give this to my mom. I'll see you at school." I say and push a door open with my back. Callum gives me a quick wave, turns, and walks over to a table with Monica.

The phone's ringing and dad's unconscious from his sleeping pills. I know he wont get up and Rosie wouldn't even get up if the house was on fire. I throw my covers off and slowly sneak down the stairs. I grab the gray, black, and white phone. The screen it orange. The caller I.D. says "County Police." My eyes widen. I hit the talk button at the last second and hold the phone up to my ear.
"Hello?" I ask. The all too familiar quickened heart beat begins to show itself. A macho voice that sounds tired and bored comes over the phone. I only hear a few words that come over the phone.
"Rosie Owens...breaking and entering...18 or older to come get her..." As soon as I hang up the phone I sprint up the stairs. I wont be able to wake dad up. I throw on a blue sweatshirt and change into black jeans. I grab my shoes and runs back down the stairs. I grab the car keys on the little table by the door and run over to the car. I turn it on and slam my foot onto the accelerate pedal. Im only a block away from the police station. The light turns red and I sit as patiently as I can. I can't handle this right now. It's not fair. Why am I the only one that has to handle everything. I have to make dinner, I have to make Rosie do her homework, I have to make sure she doesn't skip school, I have to make sure dad gets out of bed and has his breakfast. I should only have to worry about myself. I should probably be concerned for Rosie but I'm angry. Maybe she had this coming and I should let her have it. The light turns green and I go.
There's no moon tonight so when I pull up to the police station only the street lights tell me where to walk. I push open one of the glass double doors. It gets stuck halfway open. I look up and realise the door is in it's own prison. It has a metal chain connecting it to the wall. I walk up to the front desk and put my hands on the desk.
"Hi. Im here for Rosie Owens." I say as politely as I can. A man looks up and pulls out a clipboard from under his desk and hands it to me.
"Fill out the information that's highlighted and leave your I.D." He hands me the clipboard and stands up. He walks into the back where they must be holding Rosie. I don't want to sit down because if I do I'll fall asleep even in this insane situation. I fill out the sheet's and pull out my wallet. It takes me five searches through my wallet to find my I.D. I find my I.D. behind my subway card. When did I get Subway? I don't even like Subway. I fold the yellow and green card, making a whitish yellow line to appear where it's bent. I go to throw it in the trash when I hear Rosies name called out. She walks over to me with her head held high and her chest puffed out. I grab her arm and pull her towards me.
"What the hell were you thinking?" I hiss at her. She smiles at me.
"I just wanted some fun." She says. I nod and raise my voice.
"Yeah because being arrested is so much fun." People sitting in chairs lined against the wall glare at us. I get that it's late but the pain in my butt was arrested so I have a right to raise my voice. A man spits into a green, shiney, fake plant in the corner of the room. A police officer yells at him, to which he snaps back. I use this as a chance to leave.
Rosie walks into the kitchen casually and marches up to the fridge and grabs a beer. I take it from her and put it back.
"What is mom going to do with you when I'm at college?" I ask as I go to sit on the couch.
"It's not like mom will be here next year, or the year after that, or the year after that one." She says more to herself. Something inside me snaps. I turn around violently and point my finger right at Rosie, letting her know she has all my attention.
"You need to stop with this act! Mom is in the hospital and you won't see her! The cancer isnt killing her, you are! You are such a selfish child! When you don't get what you want you throw a tantrum!" I scream, crying as Rosie looks at me furious.
"Mom is going to die! I have already shut her out! I'm done. I've done my mourning!" She shouts back louder than I was.
"You can't think like that! We don't have room for anymore of your victim bullshit! I know you Rosie! If she dies and you haven't talked to her you will regret it and it will destroy you! Grow a pair of balls, hike up those big girl pants and march into that hospital, and damn it, talk to her!" I scream. Im now sobbing and adrenaline is the only thing keeping me running.
"You cant tell me what to do! Mom can only do that!" She yells, taking a few steps forward.
"Then act like it! Talk to her! You don't know what she wants from you! Not anymore!" Rosie throws herself at me. I throw my arms out and shove her to the ground.
"GROW UP YOU SELFISH ASS!" I scream. Im sure the neighbors can hear our dreadful screams and are calling the police. Im done with the police for tonight. My whole body is shaking and my chest is tight with anger. She stands up from the ground and storms up the stairs. Dad never woke up.
