Not to gloat or anything, but I've always been a perfect student. That's what they all call me. Ms Perfect. Parents, teachers, students, relatives, name it all. In fact, it's my nickname.
"Look, it's Ms.Perfect."
"What mascara does she use? Her eyelashes are so long...I'm jealous.."
"The ugly school uniform looks good on her...how?"
I walk down the halls of my school, and the whispers I get every morning are getting a little tiring. From the moment I've entered this school, it has always been like this. I am "Ms Perfect", and nobody else. I have the hair, the face, the body, the brains, the voice.
"She is an A star student, she can speak 4 languages fluently, she's the captain of the cheerleading team, she can sing with perfect pitch, she can act perfectly, she can dance ...Basically, you name it, she can do it. And on top of it she has the looks. How can you not fall for her?"
They've fixed my existing, evident, flaws in their brain so they don't see it. It's like they've built a character with the same name, personality, and body, and altered her so she is perfect in their own, special ways. A character that is no longer me. And nobody realizes, which is a little sad, but I guess I have brought this to myself.
. . .
"Guess what? I have a surprise today!" our English teacher says. Ms Jung is young, fun, and always excited. She does get a little irritating at times, but that is just because I spend a lot of time with her.
"We have a new student! Come in!", she says, and a tall boy enters. He doesn't have his tie on properly, his hair messy, headphones on his shoulders, and his hands are in his pockets. He has "bad boy" written all over him. I hide behind my books a little, because I have to admit, I feel a little intimidated by him.
"My name is Kim Taehyung." he says, bored. He then looks at Ms Jung, clearly showing in his attitude that he is done talking.
"Um..okay. You can sit....ah, right there. Next to Mina." Ms Jung says, smiling.
This is a terrible time to start an introduction, but here it goes. My name is Jung Mina, and I am 16 years old. The teacher I mentioned, Ms Jung, is actually my older sister. But it is kept a secret. And starting from today, my not-so-perfect life begins.
. . .
The bell rings for break, and my classmates all rush out to eat food or to talk to classmates from other classes. I do not have close friends. They all seem to drift away from me, or they don't like to approach me. I can kind of see why. I am known throughout my school for being "Ms.Perfect". They don't want to be friends with me, because with me comes attention. In a bad way.
"I hate being around you. Every time I like someone, they have a crush on you. Every time I try to talk to someone, they ask for your number. Every time I discuss something with my teacher, they just tell me to ask you. I don't feel good next to you. You make me feel, look, and act bad. I hate you."
The words still ache in my heart, the words that I can never forget. Even though I've said that people don't approach me, it's more the other way around. I don't approach them. Because I'm scared of what happened. I'm scared of what will happen.
"Yah."
The words snap me back to reality. I take a deep breath and turn to the owner of the voice.
"Er, hello. M-my name is J-Jung Mina. It's a pleasure to s-sit next to you." I stutter.
"Jung? Are you sisters with the teacher or something?" the boy replies, surprising me.
"Erm.."
Taehyung looks away, bored. If you couldn't tell, I am very awkward with boys.
He suddenly looks towards me again, and says, "Why do you have no friends?"
Bewildered, I open my mouth, only to close it again.
"Yah, you don't seem to be able to answer questions, but I'll give you the last one. Who's "Ms Perfect"? I heard some people whispering." he says.
"Ms Perfect...it's..erm.." I say awkwardly.
"Just tell me who it is."
If only it were that easy. If I say it's me, it sounds like I'm gloating. But I have to answer his question...he's the first person who has talked to me today. Actually, he's the first person to talk to me since I've started school.
"It's me." I whisper, barely audible.
"You?" he says, a little confused.
I can only nod, blushing of embarrassment.
He starts shaking, which confuses me and worries me a little bit, and then he bursts into a big laughter.
"You?" he says in between laughs. "But you don't have any friends. Aren't perfect people supposed to have loads of friends?"
I stare at him, not because I'm offended, but because this is the first time I've seen someone laugh so loud and so cheerfully. And I thought he was a bad boy. I look away from him, cheeks slightly warm and red.
"Mina-ah."
I flinch at him calling my name. This is the first time a boy has ever called my name so casually. I look at him, eyes widened, head slightly tilted.
He suddenly gives me a weird, rectangular-shaped smile that is both unusual and plainly adorable. It's like a precious gem I've found, unlike any other.
"I'll be your friend. Then it'll make you a real Ms Perfect."
