Merry Christmas!!! As a little present to you guys, I'm giving you the first chapter of Daughter of the Wind.

Life has a funny way of working out completely different than what you think it should, even if how it works out is something like your disabled best friend losing his pants.

It was the night before my 15th birthday, I was sitting on the couch watching reruns of my favorite tv show. I knew I should have been in bed but I was putting it off. 15 was coming of age for my family and I wasn't going to miss it for anything. Or at least, that's what I was telling my mom.

In reality, I was putting off the nightmares that I had been having for a few months.

It was always the same three dreams: two people running on a beach towards each other holding swords and ensuing in some type of battle, standing at the edge of a dark pit chuckling at me with red eyes staring through the gloom, and, the most common, a girl running through a grand town, being pursued by a horrific looking half giant/ half dragon thing.

My mom started to worry about me, so she took me to a doctor who prescribed some medication that seemed to take the edge off my nightmares. I also had a scheduled psychiatrist, Mrs. Kimme, who told me the dreams were from my ADHD, my mind was working to fast and when it tried sorting things out at night, things got really jumbled and confused.

I might have believed them, trusted them, had it not been for Bryce, my best friend. Who always seemed to know something about me that no one else did, even if he denied it. He was a terrible liar, so whenever I brought up the topic, he would get nervous and twitchy then change the subject to the weather or, strangely, tin cans.

Anyway, there I was, waiting for my meds to take affect, when a crash came from outside. Then a frantic pounding on our door. I heard stomping from behind me.

I whirled around to see my mom flying down the hallway baseball bat in hand, "Who is it?" she called.

"Bryce! I'm Terra's friend. Let me in," came the reply. It took me a minute to register, Bryce, I knew Bryce, then I walked toward the door.

"Wait!" my mom exclaimed suddenly, making me jump, "how do you know it's him? Or that he's alone?"

I rolled my eyes, my mom was always so paranoid around anyone other than me, "Because I know Bryce, anyway, why wouldn't he be alone?"

I unlocked the door and opened it for my ginger friend, he stood there in faux fur pants, shivering, not from the cold- it was a summer night in southern Mississippi, cold wasn't in our vocabulary- but from fear.

I probably should have had a million questions, like why he had shown up on my doorstep in the middle of the night or what the heck was on his legs, but the only thing that came out was, "You're standing."

Bryce couldn't stand, he was paralyzed from the waist down. That was the reason we met, him the object of bullies and me, a social outcast, together we struck fear into the hearts of everyone in Brandybuck Academy, a snooty school for rich kids. (I was on a scholarship)

My friend looked down, as if discovering he could walk had just dawned on him, "Oh, yeah, confusing, don't faint, where's mom, oh god," gasp, "big scary," gasp, "gotta go."

He was hyperventilating, again, it happened often when he would get nervous.

I put an arm around him, "Okay, deep breaths, my mom's right here," I gestured my mom forward, "What do you need?"

"Mrs. Garren, thank the gods you're here, do you know what a hydra is?"

She blinked, looking confused, then her expression morphed into fear, "Yes, why?"
