It's been about a week since that night when Clayton had expressed his feeling towards Lucas.
It was strange to her, she felt something for him. More than a friend feeling. She enjoyed it. The two of them seemed to be seeing each other more commonly now. Whether it was just hanging out at one of their apartments or if it was walking down Woodbury's streets. But by far Lucas's favorite things to do was watch the fights that the Governor held during most evenings.
Lucas and Clayton sat next to each other in the bleachers with basically the rest of the people of Woodbury, maybe numbering 75, she knew it had to be close to 100 living souls. The bleachers were placed in front of a old dirt race track. The kind of track that rednecks would come and race their beat up cars on a Friday night.
Chains were attached to the guard rail of where the pit-crews would be placed. The chains were obviously an added addition to the track.
Gabe, the Governor's chief Lieutenant and his right hand man was the first person to bring a Walker into the arena. The crowd erupted in cheers with shouts and yells from everyone around Lucas and Clayton. Soon, they found themselves cheering with the crowd.
The Walker that Gabe pushed along quickly turned its attention from Gabe, to the crowd of people that began to holler and cheer. It snared and bit at the air like it was tasting imaginary flesh. The portly man with the crew cut hair style continue to push the Walker along with a dog catcher rod.
Kenny, who was already down in the pit box quickly stood up and grabbed one of the chains in his hand. Gabe walked closer to Kenny and the Walker didn't even seem to notice him. Kenny got on his knees and attached the chain to the Walkers ankle. When the Walker finally noticed him, Kenny was already done.
From Lucas's point of view Kenny and Gabe exchanged a few words from each other, she couldn't hear from what they were saying as the crowd around them was still cheering. Then, more and more people started coming out, each one with a Walker on a dog catcher. The crowd seemed to cheer even louder when they saw the nine people come out leading the Walkers along.
Then the Governor appeared as he himself lead the eleventh Walker onto the field. But he quickly turned and started to come towards the crowd in the bleachers. Still, the crowd cheered and began to chant his title. "Governor, Governor, Governor."
The Governor and the Walker stopped dead center in front of the bleachers. Gabe came walking up as the Governor motioned him too. Gabe grabbed the handle of the dog catcher and the Governor walked out in front of the Walker, but about a yard or two away from it so it couldn't grab him.
Philip Blake raised his hands in the air and began to quiet the crowd, slowly the crowds noise began to die down. He cleared his throat before speaking. "Good, honorable people of Woodbury. We mark tonight as a special night. Tonight will be our 50th 'Rumble on the Track'!" Again the crowd erupted into a cheering frenzy.
Lucas had watched ten fights on the track, but she has only watched five of those with Clayton. Many times it was one of the fighters against countless waves of Walkers. Sometimes the fighter would have a weapon, other times he was weaponless. On a few occasions it was a person versus a person. The favorite fighter in Woodbury by far was Merle Dixion. The same man that knocked Lucas out and brought her here, the same man that killed Connor.
The crowd once again quieted down and the Governor spoke again. "Once again we will have a tremendous show for you tonight!"
A few people from the crowd shout out. "You're amazing Governor!"
"God bless the Governor!"
"We do this because we don't want to be afraid of what is outside these walls." The Governor continued his speech. "I want you people prepared for the gore and the sheer terror of the outside world. Everyone single one of you is amazing in your own way and we can get through this apocalyptic change together. None of us is alone in this world, not when we have each other!" Philip Blake grabbed his revolver that he had holstered underneath his arm. "We can do anything in this world!" He pointed his revolver at the Walker's head. Then he puled the trigger and the Walker's head exploded. "Hallow points." The smile on Philip's face grew. "Death to all Biters!" The crowd cheered again.
