Running, always running, but that doesn’t matter now, because one day running might just save your ass. Training is the only way to make sure, the only way that you can survive. Blend, train, if you get caught run, start over, but most of all survive.
Survive, that word has been haunting me my entire life. No friends, no one who could possibly identify me. Just another blonde-haired, blue-eyed, girl child. Wiry, wary, doesn’t speak unless spoken to, practically invisible. Except for one thing, she is alone. The one of few children who has been emancipated, and her younger than most. 15 years of perfect family, shattered in less than 5 minutes. One stupid mistake, and now here I am. Forced to leave my home, my parents, because they aren’t safe. Not when I am there, they hated letting me leave but we all knew that it was them or me. Two years later and I have barely adjusted. I attend high school in South Coswell High in Coswell, New Mexico. I am a night clerk at the local gas station. I live my life in fear. My name is Brenna Kella Ananda, and I have run away from everything I know.
“Alright Class, it’s the last Friday of the month and we all know what than means!” Our overly talkative, highly contrasting teacher smiled. Yay! Random week. Severe sarcasm is noted. The one time a month where my English class has an excuse to slack off. At the beginning of the year our teacher, Mrs. Hirsch, made us put one fun thing we wanted to do in a bag and every month we would read off three. The class would vote among them and we would do that thing for the class period. My card has yet to show up but I highly doubt anyone would vote for it. It isn’t exactly what any random 17 year old would think about doing.
“Okay this month’s choices are…. Name Meanings, Sob Stories, and Mad Libs. Seriously people we have one creative item on the list. All right, you know the drill. Let’s Vote!” Sighing, I got out a half piece of notebook paper and wrote down Name Meanings because it seemed like the thing that would ensure my sanity. I cannot tell people my stories and Mad Libs are an excuse for jocks to put inappropriate words in the lines. I passed my vote up and leaned back trying to sleep a little while we waited for the teacher to tally up the votes. Shock of all shocks, Name meanings was wining by at least 10 votes.
“Alright guys I think it’s clear who won. Brenna since this was your slip you can tell us what it is you wan us to do. What do you want us to do?” She looked intrigued by this I almost thought that it was rigged. With an indulgent smile I stood up and tried to do my best ‘I really am interested in this’ look.
“I always wanted to know what people’s names meant. My family named us to describe who we were going to be, so I want to know what your name says about you.”
“And what does Brenna mean?”
“My full name is the Little Raven Warrior Worthy of Love.”
“Your family has high expectations for you.”
“No, they call it like they see it.”
“A Raven?”
“I croaked as a child rather than cried. I scared my mother half to death. Thought one of the ravens got in the house.” Not to mention death and destruction follow me like my shadow.
“Did you see ravens often at home, when you were there?” Do not call attention to me lady; I will be gone faster than you can define emancipation for the rest of the class.
“The town was named after ravens- pretty sure a couple were seen once or twice.” she gives me the usual “Don’t test me, honey” look.
“Brenna, we want to know more about you. You are a real loner, and all we know about you is your name, and what it means. We want you to fit in here in South Coswell High.”
