--------------------------------Killie was told at a young age that she may not live past fourteen. Killie had many health conditions that were always putting her in the hospital. Killie had been stable for about three months which was a new record for her. She had actually gotten to go to public school during that time and got through one quarter.
Killie knew she would die young, So Kille had told herself she did not want to make friends. She didn't want anyone else to have to bear this burden that she has. Although not making any friends wasn't easy for her, but most of the time Killie was either in a wheelchair or using her forearm crunches, thats when people tried to take interest but gave up after awhile because she wouldn't talk back to them. People after awhile just stopped trying.
Killie's streak of not being in the hospital finally ended. During Killie's P.E class she was joining in on warm up's by walking around the gym on her crutches. Killie's leg began to feel heavy. She made her way over to the bench and towards her teacher. She was almost there when she collapsed in pain. The last thing she saw before she passed out was her teacher picking her up and caring her away like this had happened before.
Killie woke up to a familiar room. She was back in the hospital. Killie looked at the machine beside the bed to check if she was stable. As she expected, she was. The next thing she knew the door to her room was flying open with her mother running in. It looked like her mom was going to go in for a big hug, but instead she grabbed her hand. As always her mother was telling her how worried she was about Killie. Killie's dad was standing at the end of her bed looking at his daughter. Her dad always did this, it was as if he did know how to deal with the fact.
After another two days in the hospital Killie returned to school. It was suggested that Killie should use her wheelchair when she returned to school. But Killie made the choice to use her crutches. Killie arrived at her first class and sat down. Right after she sat down girls from her class crowded around her desk asking questions and trying to get her to talk. Killie sat there quietly getting out her stuff for english. Of course the girls got mad at her for not talking to them and started being aggressive with their words. Thats when the bell rang and the girls had to take their seats.
English ended and it was time for third period P.E. Killie always got out of class five minutes before everyone else got out so that she could get to her next class safer with her crutches. Killie was also always let in to the locker room before anyone so she had plenty of time to change. The bell rang for class ending and other kids began to file in. Kille finished changing and left the locker room as other girls were changing to head into the gym. The guys were already there which meant that her teacher was also there. KIllie went up to a teacher to give him a note from her doctor. Killie had to sit out on gym class except for a few things. The current unit they were working on was vollyball. If Killie was feeling right she was allowed to join in at times, even with her crutches.
The next thing on her schedule was advisory, which is her free period. Today Killie had a chance to help her technology teacher with printing things from the laser printer and 3D printer. Killie always loved doing that. Killie had told herself that if she lived long enough she wanted to be an engineer. She was having so much fun with it that she even stayed during lunch and ate in the room.
Killie would have gone to her next class but she was in too much pain that she went to the office to have them contact her mother. The office always knew to call her parents when she came to the office.
Her mother came and picked her up and took her to the hospital. When Killie arrived her regular doctor took her to her normal room and hooked her up. Her condition wasn't too bad. Although she was to stay for a week this time then she could return to school. Whenever Killie has to stay in the hospital for long period her teachers always send her the thing she needs to do through her school email so she didn't fall too far behind.
The week ended and Killie returned to school. On Killie's second day back at lunch some girl that was in Killie's P.E. came and sat across from her. Killie only knew a little about this girl. She knew the girls name was Maya, and that she didn't talk much, and that she was a seventh grader like her.
Maya pulled out a note from her coat pocket and placed it in front of Killie. Killie opened the note and began to read.
I hope a note is okay with you. As you may know I don't talk much, like you. My name you may already know (it's Maya). I always see you in the halls. When I do see you, you are always smiling and no matter what happens you will smile. I remember seeing you collapse in P.E a lot. you also use crutches and sometimes a wheelchair I never understood why till I finally asked my parent why. They told me it was most likely a medical condition, and that you possibly Selective Mutism because you don't talk much, with having Selective Mutism myself , I felt bad for you and I decided instead of just feeling bad for you I would find out if it was true. And I was hoping we could be friends.
Killie finished the letter and turned it over grabbed a pencil and wrote on the back.
Do you really want to know?
Maya took out another piece of paper and a pencil and wrote.
If you are willing, yes.
The girls continued to write back and forth talking.
When I was two I was diagnosed with some life threatening illnesses. When I began kindergarten I would not talk. It wasn't because I didn't want to talk I just couldn't. Its part of my medical conditions. I haven't been able to talk since birth. I have several more medical illnesses. Because of all theseWhen I was two I was diagnosed with some life threatening illnesses. When I began kindergarten I would not talk. It wasn't because I didn't want to talk I just couldn't. Its part of my medical conditions. I haven't been able to talk since birth. I have several more illnesses I was told I will most likely die at fourteen.
Maya began to write something.
Won't you be fourteen next year?
Killie answered her question and told her a bit more.
Yes, I will be fourteen next year.
Maya nodded when she saw the answer, and KIllie continued to write more.
When I turned six one of my conditions got worse and I had to use a wheelchair. When I was seven I was given the chance to switch between crutches and my wheelchair. I felt almost normal. But because of my muteness I wasn't able to make friends and because I didn't talk everyone thought I was ignoring them and didn't try to be my friends. And I didn't try because I didn't want anyone to be sad when I die .
Maya began to write again.
I don't care if you're going to be gone in a year I just want to make the most out of it. So please let me be your friend.
Killie looked at Maya for a seconded then began to write something.
I would love it if you would be my friend.
Killie showed Maya her paper with a big smile and tears in her eyes. Maya gave a huge smile back.
They say friends will last a lifetime. That was very much true for these friends. For that day forward they spent what seemed like every minute together. You could never separate them. They had both learned sign language so that they wouldn't always have to write everything. After Maya and Killie became friends Killie's constitution improved. And Maya got over her Selective Mutism. The doctors were wrong. Killie lived till she was sixteen. Killie may have died but Maya didn't morn she continued to grow up knowing that her and Killie would some day be reunited.
