He whispered like it was a secret. "Can I kiss you?"
My ear was hot with his breath and I could barely think, let alone speak. How did he get me so frazzled? He was waiting for an answer. Could I possibly say no when I wanted to say yes so badly?
Slowly, shakily, I nodded. His smiling lips brushed against my ear making my heart beat rapidly. He pulled back and looked into my eyes, silently asking me if I was sure I wanted to do this. It was so easy to pretend we were in love. I forgot all about Erik, why we were doing this, and I leaned in. It wouldn't be my first kiss but it had been so long I forgot what it felt like.
So close now.... We were almost touching and my eyes fluttered closed. Our breaths mingled together in the night air, it was the perfect moment.
Right as our lips were about to touch we heard someone calling out- "Wyatt?" In a blink of an eye our trance was broken. Rebecca looked at us in horror. "Oh my god I'm so sorry! I didn't look so I didn't realize..." She rambled on whilst I tried to steady my rapid heart. "I'll leave!"
"It's fine." Wyatt shushed her looking frazzled himself. She turned to me and I smiled slightly to show her I wasn't upset.
She sighed deeply and turned back to Wyatt. "Can I make it up to you guys somehow?"
"Actually you can..." Wyatt said surprising me. "Can you take Vic to the store? Honestly I wouldn't know what to get."
"Of course!" She nodded eagerly.
He smiled at us but didn't quite meet my eyes before he walked away leaving me feeling cold and empty.
We got in Kelly's van and barely pulled away before she let out a loud squeal. "You guys were about to kiss!"
"I know." I whispered sullenly.
"Don't be such a grouch just because you finally like someone." She teased.
"I'm not sure if I do like him...." I sighed "and even if I did he probably doesn't like me." I stared out the window trying to pretend I didn't care, it didn't matter.
"Umm, hello!" She waved her hand around like a mad woman. "Don't you see how that boy looks at you?!"
"It's all an act to pretend to be my boyfriend."
"No one can pretend that well. He isn't pretending to be your lover, he is your lover." She clarified. "Why else would he kiss you?"
"Well maybe he wanted Erik to be jealous..." I said, my brain becoming overwhelmed with the memory.
"Bull."
"But he said that's the reason." I protested, knowing it sounded a lot more likely when Wyatt said it. He could make anything sound right. That was his gift... Maybe he was born with it or maybe he learned it in therapist school...
"Mhmm..." She said letting me know that wasn't the end of it.
Instead of arguing I decided to change the subject. "So... You and Ben huh?" A blush crept up her neck and she twitched in her seat.
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Mhmm." I said as we pulled into the parking lot. As soon as we came to a stop she jumped out of the car like it was on fire and ran into the store. Chuckling, I followed her in. It was really amazing how fast she grabbed everything she thought we needed, me making a few contributions along the way.
"Becca." I grabbed her arm, stopping her as she was about to run to the checkout. "You and me, we're friends, right?"
Those few words made her sigh deeply. "I really like him Vic, but I just don't want to hurt you. I will always put you over him, that's why I'm asking you now, are you okay with me pursuing your brother? Because if you're not-"
I cut her off with a hug. "Of course I'm okay with it! My best friend dating my favorite brother is the best thing since microwavable pizza rolls."
"Oh Vic! I love you!" She hugged me tight and kissed the top of my head, reminding me of my sister. I blinked away tears before they could drop and smiled as we both pulled away.
"Alright enough of the gooey, lovey dovey stuff. Let's check this out before the guys send out a search party for us."
She chuckled. "Yeah it was stupid of them to let two girls go to the store alone in the middle of the night."
"I'll protect you." I reassured her, flexing my nonexistent muscles.
After we went through the check out we went outside. It wasn't until we were right up on the van that Rebecca noticed something.
"What's that?" She pointed to a note under the windshield wiper.
I pulled it out. It was old and crumpled but I could still read the writing on it...
Unfortunately...
It was only six words, but those six words changed my life... again.
