Chapter 1

Life's a bitch. I don't think any other phrase expresses how I feel right now more than that. Have you ever felt that way about anything? I feel this way all the time. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jaylen Marie Benton and I am 15 years old. I've always been invisible to most people except for my best friends, Madison Jade Sterling and Lucas Eli Jamerson. A lot of J's, I know but they're my friends nevertheless.
Anyway, back to who I am... I don't think people like me that well because of how I act and dress. I act, according to "normal" people, like I don't give a shit what they think, which for some odd reason, bothers the people who don't understand me. I wear a lot of black and most days I put on really heavy makeup. My past kind of sucks so I don't generally talk about it to anyone... I guess things are ok now though...

"Jaylen, we need to talk about your disciplinary issues." Great, another lecture from Principal Allen, I think to myself as I roll my eyes. Principal Allen continues,"You know our policy here, Ms. Benton, and calling a student a bitch certainly is against school rules and regulations." I just sit and pretend I'm listening for the next 30 minutes. The only good thing that comes out of these lectures is that it wastes class time. After he finishes rambling on, he hands me a pink slip of paper saying that I'm to serve one noon detention with...oh shit...Mrs. Keeney. I swear, this teacher absolutely HATES my guts. And I'm going to have to spend a whole hour with her. Kill me now...

"Why did you get sent to the Principals Office again?" Madison asks with a look of concern. "Oh, you know, the same old stuff. I called Kourtney Shae a bitch because she called me an "Emo freak who deserves to die and rot in Hell for all eternity." Yet I'm the one who gets in trouble." I say, very frustrated with the way things played out. "I'm sorry, Jay. Well, I've gotta get going. Mrs. Manson is gonna mark me tardy if I don't get to class. Ugh, I hate English!" exclaims Madison as she rushes down the hall. "I better get going, too." I mumble as I head off to Science.
As I walk into the room, almost everybody are snickering at me. I walk to my desk at the back of the class. "Hey." I say as I sit next to Lucas. "Hey." He answers back,"I heard you called Kourtney a bitch." He smiles ever so slightly. "Yup, sure did and guess what I got...a noon detention with the one and only, Mrs. Keeney!" I exclaim sarcastically while rolling my eyes. "Oooh, that sucks." replies Lucas, still smiling. "Thanks for the support." I say back.

"Everyone settle down!" yells Mr. Smith. "Today we are having a Fire Drill." Groans fill the room. I lean over and whisper to Lucas,"I bet if I went and hid somewhere right now and the sirens went off and I didn't come out of the building, no one would notice or care..." Before he has time to answer, the extremely loud sirens start going off. Mr. Smith is now screaming at the top of his lungs,"ALRIGHT EVERYONE, GET IN AN ORDERLY LINE!" Instead of joining the group I hide under my desk. And get this, no one notices. They all walk out of the room except me. Then I decide to do something really risky. I take out my lighter that I, for some reason, carry around with me. Then I set the classroom on fire. Just like that, it was burning, going up in smoke with all my rage. I leap out the window and make a run for it. I run all the way to my house and once I'm inside I lock the door. Then I begin to cry. These cries turn into upsetting sobs. "What the Hell is wrong with you Jaylen?!" I scream over and over. Soon I'm done crying and all I can do is whimper. My past is coming back to haunt me...again...
