Hitoshi eyed the new student that had just introduced herself to the class.
She was a rather small girl. If she was not wearing a school uniform she would easily be mistaken for an elementary school student.
She looked no older than thirteen at best, but on her face was an expressionless look that gave her an air of maturity.
She had just introduced herself as Emiko Hanazawa. Quite an average name for a girl like her, but Hitoshi could not help but notice a strange air about the girl.
Mai felt it too. In fact, Emiko would stare at her from time to time even as the teacher permitted her to sit down at the back.
There was an uneasiness felt throughout the class, but the other students did not have that feeling.
That girl, thought Hitoshi. She gives me the creeps.
Why does she stare at me that way? thought Mai.
Emiko's blank expression never changed throughout the duration of the class. Her unnerving stare was unnoticed by all but two students.
Later at lunch Mai and Hitoshi sat together in the classroom and brought their bentos out to eat.
"It's been a while since I've eaten Mom's cooking for lunch," said the boy as he unwrapped the lunchbox.
"How often does your mother go home?" asked Mai.
"From time to time," replied Hitoshi with a smile. "She doesn't have a schedule really. She's a botanist."
"Ah, she catalogues flora," said the girl as she opened her bento. "Interesting."
"Itadakimasu," said Hitoshi before proceeding to dig into his meal.
Mai however looked over at the back of the classroom to see Emiko still staring at her, not having moved since she sat there.
"Hitoshi," she said in a lowered voice.
"Yes?" said Hitoshi.
"That female's stare disturbs me," said Mai, lightly glaring back at Emiko.
Hitoshi then looked over his shoulder at the silver-haired girl.
"T-To be honest, I'm a bit creeped out too," said he, lowering his voice as well.
"There is something strange about that human, if it is human," said Mai.
"You think she's one of your own?" said Hitoshi.
"If she were Ardonian I would feel it," said Mai, turning to him. "She feels like... something else entirely."
"W-Well, let's not jump to conclusions," said Hitoshi with a wry smile. "She's probably just shy and wants to make friends."
"Hmmm," sighed Mai. "Should we report this to the bespectacled female in the astronomy club?"
"N-No," said Hitoshi. "No. We don't have to talk to anyone about her. Like I said, don't jump to conclusions."
Mai then glanced at Emiko once more before eating her lunch.
Emiko's unblinking gaze persisted all throughout lunchbreak.
Next class was mathematics.
Mai did not glance over at the girl who sat several rows behind her, but she could tell that she was still staring at her.
She felt a continued sense of unease as she jutted down notes with her pencil.
Why does she stare? she thought. Is she an alien assassin bent on hunting me down? Did Ay-Shinn put up a bounty on me?
