"What is your name anyways?" he asked.
"Clay." I said as I got out of the car and Delilah followed.
"Oh good now I know who to report to the dean if I don't get my money by tomorrow." he said and he began laughing. I heard his tires screech as he pulled off.
Chapter 3
I sat in my living room waiting for Madeline to show up. I'd cleaned up and a melktert was in the oven. All for her. I wanted to do whatever I could to impress her.
I heard scratching on my bedroom door. I walked over to it and banged on the door.
"Stop it! Bad Girl!" I screamed at Delilah and she whimpered. I had to lock her in the room because she ate the last melktert I baked an hour ago. I will not let her ruin this night for me.
There was a knock on the front door. I ran to it and opened the door and I could smell the vanilla that lingered on her.
"Madeline! Hi!" I said eagerly "Come in" I stepped to the side so she could enter.
"Hey Clay" she said as she slowly entered. "This is a nice place. Where can I sit?" she asked
"Anywhere" I closed the door and sat in the chair next to the sofa that she sat on.
"So" I broke the silence. "All of the tapes are here on my laptop." I patted it and opened it up. "I already pulled it up for you." I placed it on the table.
"Wow. Thanks" she said picking it up and pressing play. I felt her staring at me.
"Is everything ok?" I asked nervously.
"Yeah." She scoffed "Why wouldn't it be?" She lied. I sighed deeply.
"I've been blind for a while and I know when people are starring at me." I said not wanting to get into this with her. What I really wanted to do was ask her out.
"I'm sorry. You're just so good at being blind." She said amazed and quickly gasped. "I didn't mean it like that I-" she began to apologize.
"I know what you mean. Don't worry about it." I smiled hoping to calm her down.
The bell on my oven rang.
"I'll be right back" I got up and removed my melktert from the oven. It smelled done.
"What's that?" Madeline asked following me in the kitchen.
"It's a melktert. A tart my mom used to make. You want some?" I asked.
"Sure." I got the knife and cut her a piece as I prayed that she'd like it.
She took a bite. I could hear her chewing slowly.
"This is good" she said her mouth full "Really good" I sighed relived.
Delilah scratched at the bedroom door and whimpered.
"Is that your dog?" She asked heading towards the room. I swiftly walked to the door before she could get there.
"Don't worry about her." I banged on the door to shut her up
"You can let her out. I don't mind." She said sweetly. She had the voice of an angel.
I tried to think of something to say, but she reached for the doorknob and opened it before I could protest.
Delilah came out of the room whimpering.
"Poor baby." she said. I sighed realizing that my dog would ruin my chance by stealing all of Madeline's attention.
