IT WAS ALMOST 4 IN THE EVENING OF THE SECOND DAY of Antoine's self exile when he was summoned back to life. He had been sleeping his demons away when his iPhone 6 suddenly rang loudly disturbing his childhood room. Antoine sighed as he turned off his phone, not even bothering to see who was calling.
There is only one thing Antoine is sure about in this moment, and it's the conclusion that solicitude is very boring. And boring and nostalgia don't mix well.
One would think silence and being alone is poetic and meaningful, that soul searching and tearing yourself apart is entertaining. One would think that being back at the house you grew up in, with family and friends would heal this feeling, that reliving memories and the feel of nostalgia will give you direction, but in reality it's not.
It's boring and it's pathetic and it actually makes Antoine feel more sad than he actually was in the beginning.
Early that morning his parents went into town as they needed a few things from the grocery store and then they needed to visit some friends and his brother was in some camping trip so he wouldn't be back until next week. His mother almost ordered him to go with them since she didn't want to leave his son home alone, not after being gone for so long; but his dad quickly came to his rescue, claiming Antoine probably felt tired from the flight, so she reluctantly let him be.
With the promise of calling if he needed anything and "we'll be back as soon as we can", his parents left the house and Antoine went back to sleep. But when his phone woke him up and the house was still alone, the silence felt like he never left Spain. He instantly regretted not going, as his mind started processing the thoughts of his family leaving him because their friends where more important than him.
So he decided to keep his mind occupied with FIFA 16. But after a few hours, he felt bored. It wasn't the same without his teammates, he craved the jokes and rivalry, not that he'll tell them, but he did missed them . So he decided to watch tv, but there wasn't something interesting on. Reading wasn't an option because he was bored but not that bored.
There was absolutely nothing he could do, well he could do a lot of things, but he didn't really wanted to do anything. And it was driving him wild. So he decide to go for a walk, maybe a bit of fresh air would take the feeling away.
Antoine goes to his room and puts some sneakers and grabs his iPhone. As he crosses the living room to the front door he sees a picture of his 5 years old self hanging on the wall. The young Antoine looks at the camera with a big toothy grin while holding a football ball bigger than his legs, bright blue eyes full of life. Antoine sighs and as he heads to the door he wishes he can be as happy again.
Just as he closes the door, a dark blue RAV4 parks outside his house. Unable to se who is driving due to the darkness of the evening, he walks to the car. A pretty brunette with an amused smile is sitting on the drivers seat, and Antoine almost didn't recognize her as her hair has never been that short.
"Marie?" Antoine ask confused as she rolls down the windows. "What are you doing here?"
"Seriously? We don't see each other in months and that's the first thing you say to me?" She teases, the smile never leaving her lips.
"I'm sorry" He quickly apologizes. "I thought you were in Anoeta still"
"It's December, Antoine, everyone is going back home" she says warmly and Antoine shivers at the mention of home.
"How do you know I am here?"
"Weren't you going to tell me?" She raises her eyebrow and Antoine feels panicked, never wanting to get on her bad side. Truth to be told, he wasn't planning on telling anyone he was back in France so he could be left at peace.
"Of course, but not today" He smoothly lies. Well, it's not completely a lie, but it wasn't the truth either, and it shocked Antoine when he didn't felt remorseful towards his best friend.
"That hurt" She fakes a hurt face "But your mom said you were coming back for the holidays, and you should've answer your phone if you didn't want to see me"
Antoine gives her a confused look and she sighs. "Your mom called me and asked if I could check up on you since you weren't answering your phone"
"What am I? 7?" Antoine groans and Marie giggles.
"So where were you going to?"
"I don't know, I just wanted to walk. I don't want to lose condition"
"I could never ever be an athlete, too much sweat and pain for me"
"You are laziest person i have ever met"
"When you moved to Madrid, it took you two months to unpack" Marie states amused and Antoine gives her a killer smile and a small shrug.
Marie rolls her eyes. "Well, I was thinking maybe we could go out and have supper, Mrs Béringer dinner is still open"
Antoine only nods and jumps into the car. As Marie drives away from his childhood home, he can only hope a friend like her can distract the ghosts in his mind.
