Prologue
I smiled as I received a kiss on the nose. I opened my eyes and looked at the kisser, my boyfriend, Kyle. He was cute in every way. His eyebrows always quirked in a cute way, and his eyes always danced with pleasure of simply pleasing someone.
I was glad to be his. I was glad be be sneaking out to see him.
"I love you, Marie," he whispered, now kissing my neck. He left light kisses on my neck, then trailed them to the top of my chest. It wasn't the first sexual encounter we'd had. Maybe it was the sixth, or seventh.
The words were taken out of my mouth as he shoved his lips on mine and started grazing his cool fingers under my shirt and over my bare back. I arched my back and struggled not to pull him even closer to me.
I pulled away and looked into his eyes, cupping his cheeks in both my hands. "I love you, too, babe," I said, feeling tears start to break their way through. I never knew why I always started to cry every time I told him about my feelings toward him. Or my feelings period.
I suddenly heard a crack of a branch behind me and I stopped, whipping my head around. I saw nothing but darkness as I tried to look for what might have been out lurking in the woods.
I turned to look at Kyle, and his pleading eyes asked me not to get too curious.
Afterall, curiosity killed the cat.
But he knew I couldn't help myself. I kissed his cheek, and turned on my heel, looking around each tree until I felt a pair of hand grip my shoulders and shake me. "Happy birthday, Marie!" someone shouted loudly in my face.
I opened my shocked eyes to see my best friend, Ellie, gaping down at me. I was much shorter than her, and could easily slip under her legs in a game of basketball. "What the hell?" I shouted at her, a slight smile on my face. "How'd you know I was out here?"
She shrugged and her eyes drifted passed me over to Kyle. "He told me where to find you guys. It's your seventeenth birthday. Congrats, Girl!" she said, hugging me half to death.
I shook my head with a smile on my face then hugged her back. Ellie wasn't the typical best friend; she treated me like I was literally born in her family. Her mom even yelled at me from time to time.
I felt a hand lightly grip my wrist and I turned around to face Kyle. "I think you need to go back home. You want us to walk you to your street?" he asked, a soft glaze over his sweet eyes.
I nodded. "Yeah. What time is it?" I asked, looking down at the lit screen on my phone.
One thirty in the morning. It would take at least a half hour to get there.
I sighed, running a hand over my tired face. "Let's go," I said, starting to walk towards the road. I felt Kyle lace his fingers with mine and I gave a light squeeze. It was a thing we did. I looked ahead at the road.
"What if your mom catches you?" Ellie asked. I shrugged.
"What is she gonna do? She doesn't even spank Tanner when he colors on the walls," I told her.
She shrugged with a look of realization. "True. Kid does whatever he wants."
"Plus, I'm not going to get caught. I'm just going to hop in bed and act like it never even happened."
*~*~*~*
After I said goodbye to Kyle and Ellie, I started walking the half mile back to my house. It was a quiet, creepy walk back home. The air was crisp, the noise was silent. It was like if someone ripped a piece of paper, it would wake the whole street.
I spotted my house behind a peek of trees and I moved my feet quicker. I've only been down here this late with one other person: Kyle. He would always create conversation to get my attention off of how creepy it was at three in the morning.
I eventually made it to the doorstep, and I opened the door, shutting it quietly. I looked around, then kicked off my shoes and made my way to the dim lit stairs. The hallway light was on as always because Tanner was scared of the dark.
I shuffled quietly to the top of the stairs and started to walk to my room at the end of the hall. I looked into Tanner's room and saw that he was sound asleep. He turned over once, making his arm dangle over the side; blood covered his arm.
I gasped, slapping a hand to my mouth. I went over to my parents' bedroom and pushed the door open, seeing something I wish I had never seen before.
Both of my parents were dead.
