Chapter 1
“At Last”
“Ring, ring, ring” rang Mr. Sharps phone.
“I’m so sorry children.” said Mr. Sharp in sorrow.
“I think it’s my cat Molly calling.” he answered the phone with, “Meow, meow meow meow meow. Hi mom”
“Awkward!” yelled Blake, the most popular kid in school. My best friend Wendy and I started to giggle, and once we started, we just couldn’t stop. Zachary is Blake’s best friend. He gave Blake a hi-five for his comment. Mr. Sharp hung up his phone.
“Okay class. Who’s up for a little challenge?” said Mr. Sharp excitedly.
Wendy and I raised our hands. Who knows, it could be fun. Blake and Zachary did the same.
“The challenge is to get in a pair with your friend and make a poster on how important artifacts in the museum are.” Mr. Sharp said.
“Ugh! That sounds boring!” I shouted.
“Who said that?” yelled Mr. Sharp.
Of course, the class tattle tale had to step in and do her part. “It was Charlotte! Bust her! Bust her! What are you waiting for?” Her name is Mandy and you can see why nobody likes her.
“Sometimes I wish she just got permanent laryngitis!” I told Wendy.
“Yea, someday….” she replied.
“Alright,” said Mr. Sharp. “The prize is an overnight stay at the museum of un-natural history! Ha! You get it! Un-natural history!” Mr. Sharp practically laughed himself out of his chair.
The school bell rang. It was time for lunch. Everybody raced to be first in line because they were serving milkshakes today. Wendy walked over to me.
“Hey Charlotte, you wanna be my partner?” asked Wendy.
“Sure.” I responded.
At my lunch table, Wendy and I were discussing our project when guess who walked over. It was Blake and Zachary! What would they want with us? Were not even popular! We waited until they talked first.
“We heard you’re in the contest.” said Blake. “Mind if we sit?”
“Not at all.” said Wendy.
“Do you want to do the project together? As a group?” asked Zach.
“Sure.” I quickly responded. I couldn’t believe my ears!
“Do you want to come over my house to work on the project today?” asked Blake.
“Absolutely!” said Wendy not stopping to think.
OMG I thought. Blake just invited us to his house! How could this day get any better! The rest of the lunch period was a dream come true. None of us ate. We were too busy discussing our poster. We might even have it done by today!
School was over and it was time to get on the bus. All of the girls, including Mandy, we’re jealous. We started our homework to get it done. The rest of the bus ride was filled with equations such as the square root of negative 12.67 and geometry such as the area of a parallelogram times 8.417 of a square.
“I’m glad we got that over with.” said Wendy.
“Yea, and just in time.” replied Blake. “This is my stop.”
As we walked down the driveway, I tripped over a shift in the ground. Everyone ran over to help.
“You should let Blake help.” said Zach. “He wants to be a doctor when he’s older.”
Blake took one look at my ankle and right then, he knew it was broken.
“Let me help you into my house.” Hr said kindly.
I started to get Goosebumps.
“Common’.” Blake said calmly. “Easy does it.”
My eyes were filled with tears, but I tried to keep then in. As I tried to move, the pain roared in. Then, we finally reached his house. I sat down and leveled my leg. I put icepacks one it. Wendy called my mom. While we were waiting for her, we worked on the poster. By the time we were finished my mom came. The finished project said, “Remember the Past, as Well and the Future.” It had pictures of old things that made an impact on society as well as the things that are still to be created. My mom took me to the hospital, but before I left, Blake told me to tell him about the fracture if I was in school tomorrow.
The next day, as I used my crutches, everyone in school was crowding me asking sill questions like, “Are your four best friends?’’ and “How’d you brake your ankle?” I ran, well wobbled, to Wendy as fast as I could. Blake followed close behind. I told them it wasn’t a serious fracture so it should be healed in a little while. We handed in our poster.
“The winners will be announced in a few weeks.” Mr. Sharp said while reading some posters. The rest of the day, people crowded us and asked questions. By the end of class, my head was pounding!
