"Jacob! Come look at this one!" As we dug through the journals, I found one about something I liked- mirrors. It was written by our great great great grandmother Elise.
I heard of her once, and let me tell you, that woman must have had spunk. My brother, Jacob, walked over. "Melanie, whatever this is, it better be good. I just walked away from Baxter to come see it." He said, obviously annoyed. Baxter was our fathers dog. After dad died, he always seemed depressed, so we kept him company.
I opened the journal. Instantly, I could tell it was old. As I turned the pages, dust flew into the air. I swatted the gray powder away.
"That must be as old as Elise herself!" I exclaimed after sneezing. Jacob looked at me as if I cursed. "Melanie! Have some respect for your great great great grandmother."
Gosh, he's two years older and he acts like he's so important. "Sorry. Let's just read the journal." I state, knowing he'll be fascinated.10/23/1856
Today I went to the palace ball. I wore a pink gown, and my father even keep let me put ribbons in my hair! Father wasn't very happy when I told him I danced with Prince Nathaniel. Oh well, it's not his decision, now is it? Anywho, as I arrived I noticed something odd. The prince had a small reflective badge on his chest, and I found myself looking at my reflection as he danced with me.
Besides from the "N" engraved into the badge, it seemed pretty normal, but after I looked at it for a while, I noticed something strange.
Whenever I blinked, my reflection didn't, and whenever I was staring at it, it would blink even when I wasn't. It even seemed to be giving me a strange look, a mix between a scowl, and a look saying that I let her down.
We danced for a while, and eventually I got too tired to continue.
"Prince Nathaniel, it was wonderful talking to you, but I think I have to get going." I say sadly.
He gives me a small smile, and kisses my hands. "Until we meet again, my lady." He bows, and I curtsy.
I walk through the giant hallways of the palace. When I finally find my way out, I realize it's later then I thought it was.
I have to walk home, and it's hard in high heels. I find myself tripping over everything.
When I arrive back home, I'm holding my shoes in my hands, my feet barefoot. At some point in the walk I had taken them off. I see my father waiting impatiently outside the front door, and pray he's in a good mood.
I walk up to the red door and up to my father. "Elise. You're late." All hopes I had of him being happy vanished. "Darn." I muttered to myself, I knew he'd never hear.
"Well I was dancing-" I was cut off by my father. "I know you were dancing. It was all over the news." He said sternly.
"'Local Girl dances with Prince Nathaniel'. Elise, what did I tell you about princes? Filthy little actors they are." Was it true? Did Nathaniel lie about everything he'd said? No, it couldn't be. I felt my face turn into a boiling pot of Tomato Soup.
"Father.." He just glared at me "Up to your room." He scowled. "Now."
I cried and ran upstairs. I was hurt, offended. I didn't believe my father. Nathaniel couldn't have been lying... Could he have? Of course he could. He was a prince, trying to find a princess.
Why he'd choose me I have no idea, but still. I stared in my mirror.
"What is his problem?" I asked, referring to father. Then I noticed it. My reflection didn't speak back to me, didn't move their lips. "Oh my goodness.."
Whatever, or whoever, was in their must have noticed they did something wrong, because they seemed to look frantic as they struggled to hear what I'd said.
I squinted at it, that's when I realized how tired I was. As my eyelids scrunched up, I found myself getting sleepy.
I sighed and changed into my night gown, and that leads us to now. Please lord, if you read this, give me a sign- tell me what's beyond the mirror.
Hey guys it's Tal, and thanks for reading the first chapter! I'm sorry it was pretty short, it was supposed to be a prologue but then it turned into the first chapter, and I thought we were at a perfect time to end it! And also, it's not going to be like I write one chapter, Ella writes another, we both write bits and pieces. So again, thanks for reading, and the next chapter will be at least 1,000 words!
