Renee was running out of energy. Her muscles swallowed up her last reserves as she continued to push her legs to run as hard and fast as possible. Her pace continued to slow, and her chaser was catching up. Her lungs burned and could barely take in a breath from the pain. Her legs grew weak, and rubbery with fatigue, faltering over every stone, branch, or molehill pounding under her aching feet. She could barely see through the tears that streamed down, drying on her already wind burned face. She could hear her heart pounding over the exhausted breaths she took. Holding on tightly to the torn clothes she wore, she desperately looked for a place she could quietly hide. She felt like she was in a surreal horror movie. She hoped this ending would be much less gruesome.                                                                                                     ...Renee awoke with beads of sweat sticking to her neck, her heart pounded heavily against her arduous breathing chest. She felt as if she'd been running a long-distance marathon. The room felt cool, and the fan was blowing directly on her, turning her sweat into icy droplets of salty water before they dried on her skin. The night terror was getting worse, more realistic. The same one played through her mind for the past two nights. It felt like something was coming. But she didn't know what. She meant to discuss it with the queen or Gage, but they had both been so busy making sure she remained safe that she didn't want to trouble them with more. She would be happy when all this was over, and she could have a normal life again. If such a thing existed anymore, she thought. Her life would never be the same after this, not matter how much she wanted it to be.
