The next morning I woke up around 10:30. I got up and walked downstairs to the kitchen and was greeted with a full plate of waffles and a glass of orange juice.
"Here, sweetie." My mom said, handing me the plate filled with delicious, golden brown waffles that were drowned in butter and syrup.
"Thanks." I replied as I sat at the table, cutting into a waffle.
"Walker asked if I could show him around the neighborhood today, is that ok with you?" I asked my mom.
"Sure that's fine. Just be home before five please, we are going out to dinner for your dad's birthday."
"Oh no! I forgot about dad's birthday."
"It's fine, we can pick up a card later if you want." My mom replied.
"Ok, thanks," I said as I was finishing my waffles, "I'm going to get dressed."
"Ok, sweetheart."
I went upstairs and flopped onto my bed. I grabbed my phone off of my nightstand and checked for any new messages. None. Surprising. Not really.
Oh well. I thought as I picked out my clothes for the day. I put on a pair of dark jean shorts and a light purple tee shirt. I also grabbed my sneakers and a pair of ankle socks.
By now the time was eleven on the dot. I grabbed the third Harry Potter book, The Prisoner of Azkaban (my favorite book),and I sat back down on my bed. I flipped open the book and reread the first few chapters. Then, I heard my iPhone buzz.
I had a message from Walker.
Hey Kellie. Are you ready?
I checked the time 11:56. I guess I had lost track of time while I was reading.
Sure I'll be out in just a second.
Ok, cool. He quickly typed back.
I walked downstairs to the front door and said bye to my mom. Then, I walked outside and was greeted by the warm sunshine and a slight breeze. It wasn't as hot as it had been on the 4th, which was really nice considering how warm it had been.
I looked around and saw Walker walking down the sidewalk towards my house. I met him halfway so he wouldn't have to walk as far.
"Hey." He said.
"Hi."
We started walking down the sidewalk together.
"So are you going to Washington High this year?" I asked him.
"Yep, are you?"
"Yeah I am."
"Cool." He replied.
"Yeah I guess. So do you want to meet people that will be going to our school or just meet some people from the neighborhood?"
"Hmm I guess people from our school, I don't won't to start out the year as a complete loner."
I laughed and replied with an "ok".
"Here is Mandy's house. She is a year older than us but you still might have some classes with her." I said as I walked to her door. I knocked and Mandy's mom answered.
"Hi, is Mandy home? This is Walker, he just moved here."
"No, Mandy isn't here right now but I can tell her you stopped by. I'm sure she will be so excited to meet you, Walker."
