(à) Chapter 10 (ß)

Standing in the hall without Wil at my side felt awful. It was the first time I'd walked into Ashley Waters and Wil wasn't at my side or right behind me since Bry left.

I tried to throw off the feelings of abandonment that stupidly came when Bry left and seem to crop up whenever they feel like it. Wil hadn't abandoned me. He'd been targeted by some crazy chemene and had to stay home until his guardian felt him able to return.

And, knowing Kayli, that'd be after she re-diapered the guy. When he went off to college, I'd love to see her face while he left.

I sighed as I pushed myself to go ahead. Straightening my shoulders, I ignored the whispers. People were already creating rumors about why Wil was not at my side.

Should've probably sent out a mass text to my followers about his absence, I thought. I'd have to do that myself. Wil didn't need anyone texting or calling him with problems while he was stuck home with the dragon.

I had everyone's numbers, I'd just never had to actually do the mass text thing myself.

I typed as I walked down the hall, still keeping aware of my surroundings never once letting my guard down. Couldn't have anyone thinking I was weaker just cause I didn't have my 2 with me. Though to be honest, I so was.

I started getting replies immediately. So much that my phone just did a constant vibration not even stopping once for like 3 minutes. I think I should start paying Wil when he comes back. If he comes back.

Nope, not gonna think like that. He's coming back.

Stopping at a locker where a couple kids were, I smiled gently. "Did you have any other problems yesterday, Grady?"

He smiled up at me-literally the kid was like an inch shorter than me. Made me feel better about being such a shrimp at 18---and replied "Nope. When you dropped me off, I stayed in all day and studied a bit."

Smiling, I nodded and looked to the guy he was standing with. "Hey, Jensen. How've you been?"

Jensen was tall; maybe 6'3 at the least. But he wasn't gangly or anything either. He had muscle mass. But he was my follower because he wasn't a jock like Rocky liked and he wasn't into drugs or alcohol like Greg liked his followers to be. I wouldn't have been surprised if he had chosen to not follow a 1 at all, but Grady had brought him to me a year ago. Hadn't had to help him with much, but he was a good guy from what I did know of him.

Jensen smiled as well, shifting his backpack from one shoulder to the other as he leaned up against the lockers. "Good. Good as life at AW can get, ya know?"

I nodded; AW life was a lot different than regular life.

"Where's Wil," Jensen boldly questioned, uncaring or maybe caring but not sure if it was a problem to ask.

Sighing, I leaned up against the locker next to him with one foot propped up against the locker and my arms crossed above my chest. "He's out today. But he'll be back soon."

"So....you haven't dropped him as a 2, then?"

My head swiveled to Grady immediately, and he flinched under my stare. I toned it down remembering how he wasn't the type for confrontation.
