"Its synthetic blood, the type you humans use for transfusions."
She informs us, tossing a bag of A- my way.
"The blood needs to be ingested. Just stab the bag with a needle, slap the bag hole-side down over the patient's mouth and then cover it with their hand. Work quickly and carefully, your necks are quite literally on the line." She said, chuckling at her own joke.
"There are 38 wards open, already operating and working the same as you will be. They are receiving approximately seven hundred wounded an hour. You are a last resort."
Just as she finished talking the steel double doors at the end of the room started to shake, dust fell from the ceiling and a dull rumble got louder.
The woman's eyes shot to the ceiling and then looked back at us.
"Looks like the war has found you."
***
The fighting had been going on for years.
Many humans were oblivious to it at first; until the streets became deserted and the schools, high streets and hospitals turned into battle grounds.
Many vampires were changing, their DNA itself evolving. I suppose you can call it a civil war- between a higher race of vamp and the mutated 'Ferals'.
It's difficult to explain.
Seen the film 28 days later? I am Legend? Well that's what the feral are like. Humans bitten by them increase in muscle mass but decrease in brain power, until they are nothing but irrational blood-thirsty monsters.
Radiation, toxic waste, mutated viruses- no one knows what caused vampires to start turning into Feral.
Many agree that it's probably the same thing that is slowly changing the human race, causing the handful of 'human miracles' and mutants.
Still following me?
I'll give you an example.
John works in the same job for twenty years. He lives in the same apartment block with ten thousand people in the same city as thirty million other humans. He's had the same routine for decades. Only one day on his way to work he's hit by a car.
He doesn't die. Instead of dying of the decapitation that occurred- he grows another head.
Not normal eh? It doesn't happen all the time, but it's just happened to that one person out of millions.
I'm one of them.
One day I woke up and noticed that it only took me five minutes to get ready for school. Another day after 'irradiating' the apartment I looked at the clock and noticed it had only taken me eight minutes, not the usual two hours.
I learnt from then on that when I focus on a job, and I mean REALLY focus- time seems to slow just for me.
I've even practiced at school. If I focus on the teachers eyes during a lecture, everything else in the room slows down.
I quickly learnt that the second I lose focus I crash back into normal time, everything fast forwarding in seconds, again, just for me- usually resulting in me fainting or screaming.
That means that I have to focus throughout- I can't just get up and walk around.
On my sixteenth birthday, the night my family was murdered by Ferals- I was saved and taken below the city. I'd spent the last year and a half working for the Vampires who saved me in the catacombs under the city that serves as their headquarters. I suppose I'm a modern day slave, but with breaks.
