A moment fell when the ghostly whispers of the restless wind blew past Kevin as he placed the last of his belongings into a small brown box. A painful sigh escaped his lips at the thought of never being able to return to the place where his life had begun. With the tape lying beside him, he picked it up and began sealing the box, making sure it was secure enough to cope the bumpy journey to his new house. However, just as his taped down the last flap, a strong yet gentle gush of wind rushed past pulling his hair to dance along to the howls of the breeze. Kevin inhaled the freshness as his eyelids curtained down allowing his mind to liberate from all the agony filled thoughts that entrapped him into a world of darkness. A sudden splat on his face startled him causing his eyes to squeeze tightly and his shoulders to jolt up. He slowly relaxed his body and raised his head to face the sky. The window being wide open gave him a good view of the grey coated clouds that made sure every bit of blue was out of sight. Weathers like this reminded him of the reality of life. That one can only go on cheerfully as long as the clouds did not emerge.
One by one, the rain poured down, getting faster by the minute and each drop began to cover every inch of his face until the water began to drip down the edge of his chin. Kevin could feel the beat of his heart throbbing unbearably as the rain continued to fall. The rain bought him the remembrance of his own tears and he hadn't even realised that he was weeping silently until he felt the warmth of his tears take over his cheeks. Every hurt he had inside him grew as he wished for the past when all was better.
Suddenly, a quiet rustling appeared as the wind increased in power. Kevin opened his eyes only to see a small sheet of paper scuttling around the floor. He reached his hands out to catch the piece to see what it was. But when he saw the what was printed on the paper, he sighed again. It was a photograph taken a few years back with his mum, dad, grandpa, brother and him standing by a park lake. Everyone of their faces had a huge smile plastered on them as if they were the happiest family in the world. But now, Kevin found it almost alienating to even think that that boy was once him. He no longer knew what it felt to smile with all his heart. He wasn't even sure if he still had a heart. It seemed like his chest only had a stone constantly stabbing him with each beat.
His vision blurred as his eyes stared at his father and his brother. Both of their blue eyes sparkled at the reflection of the sunlight and their smiles... Kevin desperately wanted to hear the high pitched giggle of his brothers laugh and the soft chuckles of his fathers' laugh. It's going to be okay, he'd tell himself, but day by day it began to seem like a lie. He looked up at the sky once again and shook his head. There was a part of him wanting to call out to whatever or whoever was up there for some sort of light, but he found it almost futile now as everything felt as if it was over anyway.
Kevin could feel himself on the verge of breaking so he tightened his grip, not caring if the picture was being scrunched up. He decided he wouldn't look at it anymore so he folded it up and slid it into the side of the box and finished off sealing the last flap. With that done, he lifted himself up along with the brown box, took in a deep breath, exhaled and walked out the door to place his things in the moving truck. After he managed to successfully relocate each box out of his room and into the van he took one last look at the house before leaving it all behind. Each step he took as he walked out of the house, an echo formed emphasizing the emptiness of the house. It was almost as if they were calling him to stay. The walls were stripped down from the colour and decoration that were once there and the rooms cried with loneliness with only a light bulb to accompany them. With all the things Kevin felt he lost, going away from this house made him feel as if he was losing one more thing.
"Goodbye," he whispered as if he was leaving a friend and turned away, closing the door gently behind him. Before getting into the car, he took a moment to spare his home one last glance. Memories began to play in his head like a movie as he recalled bits and pieces from his childhood. He still did not want to leave because he knew when his dad would return, this would be the place he'd come back to find his family. But now that he was moving, Kevin felt as if he'd never reunite with his dad or even his brother.
