“Annie? Annie are you even listening?” My friends drew me back to the real world and out of my thoughts. They all gave me a knowing look as they had eventually accepted that something had changed over the summer and, after constant badgering, have realised that I will tell them what happened in my own time. They’re still waiting.
I put on my best fake smile and said “Of course Hannah, you were talking about the outfit for this week’s party” Hannah flashed me her brilliant smile and carried on rambling on about the “totally cute outfit to catch Wills attention”. That was a close one luckily Hannah is always talking about clothes so it was a lucky guess. Sighing I returned to the half eaten sandwich in front of me and stared aimlessly around the modern dining hall of my school. You always hear about the American groups in the lunch hall and I realised that it was totally the same here: there were the clever kids (geeks), the rock music fans (emos), the normals and then our table, the populars.
I looked at my friends all excitedly chatting about this Saturday and where they were all getting ready etc. A few months ago this would have been me too. Not since I met him.
(Flashback)
“Mum I’ll be fine, honestly it’s just a few weeks”
“Ok but call me if you need anything, don’t forget the food shopping gets delivered on Tuesdays but you can order anything extra if you want” I could practically recite the words with her as she spoke, she had said it so many times. My mum and dad were going away to the country side for a few weeks as a birthday present to my dad. So I had opted out of that one as quickly as possible claiming to have ‘studying’ to do.
A few short hours after they had left the silence in the house was already getting to me. I grabbed my keys and phone and headed to the local coffee shop.
This shop was definitely my favourite. It had cute, vintage posters and pictures hanging on the walls and up the iron staircase it was like a library with old books on the shelf’s and beanbags and sofas spread around. I sat in a little armchair in a far corner and pulled a book out of my bag and sat there, listening to the quite chatter of voices and the noise of the London streets.
It was when my coffee came and I looked up to thank the waitress that I saw him. He was sitting in a little booth by himself, wearing a blue super dry top and jeans and a single paw tattoo on his arm. But it was his hair that caught my eye. It was a brilliant glowing ginger, much brighter than my dark auburn, and it almost looked as if he had just rolled out of bed that way but it suited him so well. He looked up and our eyes locked together. I felt my cheeks blush and smiled shyly before returning to my book.
Shyly. Why did I smile shyly? I wasn’t shy I was Annie Hale, part of the populars I was everything but shy. I sat there thinking of something to do to make it ok to go over him but after at least 10 minutes I still had nothing and a very cold coffee. I packed my book away and picked up my coffee mug and prepared to walk past him. As I passed his booth he looked up again and I saw just how blue his eyes were and they were dazzling, I tried to smile more confidently this time but managed to tip over a beanbag in the process and stumbled slightly. I laughed it off and smiled back at him before walking down the stairs.
(End of flashback)
I don’t believe that I loved him. Not then anyway because I didn’t know him, but I sure as hell wanted too. The pips signalling the start of next lesson once again brought me back from my thoughts. Waving at the girls I headed to my locker and to my next lesson. Maths. Great.
