My father gave me a dusty old notebook before he died. He told me to open it when he is no longer around. I got angry at him for saying such things. He just smiled and told me, "Dawn, promise me that you will read it."
I never thought that would be his last words. I cried profusely as I remembered that night, how the doctor announced his time of death or how he pulled the white sheet to cover my father's face.
Everyone would have left by now. My mother was sitting on the sofa with a big album on her lap. As she flipped to the next page, I could see how sad she was though she was smiling. It is nice to see her smile after days of her crying her eyes out.
I went to my room to read the notebook my father gave me. I want to fulfill his last wish. I sat on the edge of my bed as I opened the dusty covers of the notebook. I saw a picture of my mother when was young on the first page with a caption , My happiness.
On the next page, it revealed that the notebook was indeed a diary.
March 1980
I am so happy that my parents accepted my suggestion that we go back to their hometown. I told them that it would be nice to breathe some fresh air and leave the city dirt and noise. They do not know that a girl is the real reason.
I never told them because they might think that I have gone nuts. Though, I really think I have gone nuts about this girl. It was such a long time when I last saw her but the memories we shared pre occupied my mind for the past years up until now. All I wanted to do is to see her one last time and share more happy memories with her.
April 1980,
Everything is all set. I packed everything I have. I looked once more at our house for many years. I feel like crying , so many memories. I said my goodbye to our home silently in my mind believing that I will have more happy memories on my new home.
The trip took as six hours to get there. The sceneries outside my window is superb. I rolled down the window and let the fresh air enter. My mother called me out of the car. I helped my father carry our luggages to the house, standing near the door is my grandfather whom I have never seen for three years.
He smiled at me at patted my back. He knows about my condition. He led me to my bedroom which I liked. He told me that he knew about my love of sunrise thus he gave me this room.
We ate dinner silently. After dinner, my mother told me that we are going to school tomorrow to enroll. I helped my mother clean the table. I went to bed early
The morning breeze is cold in a nice way. It is only 5 am and I am waiting for the sun to show up. At 5:30 am , I could see the sun starting to rise filling my room with bright yellow color. The sunrise for me is a hope that my day would be warm and bright.
