Avril Longsted carefully snuck past her mother's sleeping chamber, trying to get to the door. Avril's dog, Gus, a golden retriever mix, walked at her heels. Avril made it to the door, unlocking it with the outmost of care. Gus ran ahead of her when she opened the door. "Gus, come back" whispered Avril. Gus turned his head a walked back to her. Gus and Avril made their journey to the town square. Today was the day she was to get a job to help her family.

Avril's mother, Gretchen, woke with a fright. She clutched the sheets to her chest and thought about her dream. Avril leaving her forever, no one around to cheer her up, she'd be forever alone. Pulling herself together, she went to go wake up Avril. "Avril, time to get up, you need to clean the chicken coop" said Gretchen. Avril didn't answer. "Avril" she said again. Gretchen opened up Avril's door and screamed. Avril was gone and so was Gus. Her dream had cone true! She'd be forever alone without her. Gretchen looked around Avril's room for items to remember her by. She then noticed a piece of paper attached to her window. It read: I'm sorry, Mother. I stepped outside to find a job. I want to help our family and that's the only way. Please forgive me. -- Avril. Gretchen dropped the letter and went on a search for Avril.
