CHAPTER ONE

"Lillian, where are you?"

I popped up from behind the curtain of one of my rooms. I was the mayor's daughter so I had plenty of space to roam around. We lived in a small town in the middle of nowhere. Nobody had ever heard of us, nor did they care to. We never had visitors and nobody had ever left. People who lived in Tiny Town, stayed in Tiny Town.

"I'm here," I replied, tugging at my dress. I was forced to wear dresses but I always wore another outfit beneath them. When I wasn't at City Hall, I was out and about wearing regular clothes.

"Your father wishes to see you," the Secretary said.

I walked to my father's office and knocked curtly, "Daddy?"

"Come in, my darling."

I opened the door and slid in silently, shutting it behind me.

I sat in a chair in front of his deal, "You wanted to see me?"

"Yes," he hesistated, "I want to transfer you elsewhere."

"Why? Have I done something wrong?"

"No you haven't done anything wrong. I just feel you'd enjoy moving elsewhere. Your aunt has a beautiful chateau in Napa Valley."

"Daddy, I dont wanna move with Aunt Jeanne."

"It will be safer for you."

"Safer? Safe from what?"

"This town."

"Nothing ever happens in this town," I paused, "Daddy what did you do?"

"I upset some other colonies."

"Nobody uses the phrase colonies. This isnt the 1500's."

"No. These are colonies."

"Of what?"

"I don't know. The deal was strictly need to know."

"So you don't know who we're dealing with?"

"What."

"No you tell me."

"No. We dont know what we're dealing with."

"You mean like aliens?"

He stared me, "Honestly, Lillian, I don't know."

"What kind of mayor gets involved with stuff like this?" then I thought, "oh. You're only joking, aren't you?"

"I wish I was, Lily."

"Dad. Do you need to see a doctor? Are you feeling alright?" I walked over and put a hand on his forehead. I looked at his features, the ones we shared and the ones we didn't. My father had black hair as opposed to my brown. He had green eyes and I had blue. We both shared the same small nose and smile.

He pushed it away, "Honestly, Lil, do you think I'd lie about something like this?"

"Yes. Because no sane person would spew stuff like this. I mean, grandpa went insane."

"It's time you knew the family history."

"I know it already. Our family founded the town and named it after ourselves. Tiny Town. I am Lillian Tiny, next mayor of Tiny Town. It is passed from generations, starting with a million greats ago," an obvious exaggeration, "and it continues through the Tiny's. Usually men but I'll be the first female mayor of Tiny Town."

"That's the story in the history books."

"Even me?"

"No. You're only 17."
