"Why'd you move here?" It was Friday morning and for some reason Tate was very curious and distracted. "My dad lives here." He nodded, "Did you live with your mom?" I shook my head and continued to write. "Foster care." He paused and pursed his light pink lips, "oh I'm sorry" I looked up, "why so many questions?" He shrugged his shoulders, "I don't know, I've spent most of my time with you lately and so does my sister. Kind of want to know where you came from, who you are, because I like spending time with you." I wasn't sure why but suddenly I felt comfortable and I wanted to tell him everything, "okay, ask anything" he smirked, "I want your life story, details, everything. If you're okay with that?" I nodded, "uh I was born in Fort Hood, my dad was stationed there so it was my brother, me, and when I was three another brother, when I was five my parents split and my mom took us to Warm Springs, Georgia. She got into drugs and we moved a lot. When I was eight she dropped us off with my aunt in Atlanta, Georgia. My aunt is a piece of trash and she'd leave us alone for months at a time, I ended up messing around with a local Mexican gang and when I was 12 I was arrested for selling, spent some time in a juvenile facility, my brothers were put in foster care, after I got out I joined them. We moved to different houses with different families until a few months ago my dad tracked us down, they gave us to him, and I hope to stay, I mean Joseph is 13 and he's never really had a steady home, and my older brother never had one, but he's in Alaska now." He seemed to hold onto every word that came out of my mouth after a moment he looked down, "well if its worth anything, I hope you stay too." I smiled lightly and his blue eyes seemed to change to green and I just noticed them. "Tate, what color are your eyes?" He smiled, "you're the one looking into them" the electric green was both new and beautiful. "Well I thought they were blue but now they, they're green." He froze and I watched the green get brighter he looked terrified. His pen fell out of his hand and hit the floor. He shoved his hands into his coat pockets. "Are you okay?" He nodded, "I have to go. To the restroom, I'm so sorry." Funny thing is he didn't look at me, or open his mouth completely just ran off with his head down. I waited for hours, but he never came out. The sound of grey's voice clear behind me, "you skipped school." I turned her wavy dark hair sat neatly on her shoulders, her grey eyes seemed to look through me, she was skinny, everything about her was defined, her tan hinted at a hispanic background, she looked over the table and smiled, "waited for him all day?" I nodded slightly embarrassed, "dont next time. He won't come back." She sat down across from me, "does this happen a lot?" She shrugged, "not really, Alice does it too" I was confused and curious, "Where do they go?" She shrugged, "not my business. They'll be back soon. Don't mention it." Don't mention it? How could I keep it to myself? "Do you know more than you're telling me?" She laughed, "Of course I do." She leaned over the table, "if you deserve to know you will, until then don't ask questions. I'm here to help you." I laughed, "you don't like me." She sat back, "you're not wrong." I rolled my eyes. "I don't know why he's into you." I let it roll off my back, "what now?" She starred at me, "you're going home, sit alone in your room, occasionally check your phone, and wait for a call you're not going to get" I scoffed and began to pack my stuff, "don't take the woods home." Chills went down my spine as I got up and left her there.
Sitting in my room alone, staring at the white walls, occasionally looking out the glass doors into the woods. They were empty, as always. Grey was right i'm waiting for him and I shouldn't be his isn't coming or calling. But I couldn't help laying there thinking about it. Next thing I knew I was watching the sunrise over the trees. I grabbed my camera off the nightstand and took a few pictures. That's when someone knocked on my door, "come in" tall, muscular, tan, dark hair, brown eyes, pure Puerto Rican, that's my dad, "what are you doing up bug?" I shrugged focusing my camera on the top of the trees, "can't sleep, I guess" he sat down on the edge of my bed and patted the spot next to him, "do you want to talk about it?" He already knew I didn't, he may not have been with us the last 11 years but he knew me better than anyone ever would, "boy stuff" he stood up slowly, "no" I smiled, "go to work old man" he kissed the top of my head and he was gone. I let myself crawl out of bed towards the balcony doors, it felt odd standing there like I was being watched. I pushed the feeling aside, opening the double doors, the fresh smell of pine and early morning innocence filled my nose. "Taking it all in." Joseph might be 13 but he doesn't look it, he looks older than me actually, and just like my dad. I guess that's normal. "Yeah, I've been doing that a lot lately" she smiled leaning out his window to look at me. "I'm glad we're here." I nodded, "so do I" I pursed my lips, "hey, don't worry, we'll be here forever" I laughed, "I'm glad you have so much faith" he laughed, "I have faith in you. If this isn't forever you'll never leave me alone." He was right, I couldn't leave him even if I wanted to, he was the only one I went through everything with, "you're right" no matter what I do he'll always stand behind me, "how's school?" He shrugged lightly, "school" I was always jealous of his eyes. He had my mothere's blue eyes while I got her curls, pale skin, freckles, strawberry-blonde hair, I look a lot like her neither of my brothers do. I'm the only one that looks white in a Puerto Rican family. "I'm going to make breakfast want some?" I nodded. "Of course"
