Chapter 1

"Good night sweetie."

"Wait... Check for monsters.."

A small sigh was heard. "You need to overcome your fears. Tell you what. I'll tell you what my mother told me while I was growing up. Wanna hear it?"

I clutched my blanket and nodded slowly. "You can check for monsters under your bed, in your closet, behind your dresser, left or right, but never up... She hates being seen." A sudden pain shot up my spine, making it hard for me to breathe. There was a bulge in my throat and I couldn't swallow. I clutched my eyes shut. My mother chuckled.

"It's just a myth sweetie. Sleep tight. Don't let the bed bugs bite." The door creaked as I heard it shut. Her footsteps were heard as she walked down the hall, they faded until I heard no more. 'Don't look up. Don't look up. Don't look up.' I forced my right eye to open and there was nothing there. I opened my left, silence filled the room. It was quiet... Quieter than ever. The wind wasn't blowing, the floor wasn't creaking... I gulped, my forehead becoming sweaty. It's just a myth. I looked to my left, then my right. There was nothing to worry about, it just a myth after all. Is big foot real? No, maybe, but mainly no. Are mermaids real? Nope. What is there to worry about. I got comfortable in bed, laughing at my mother's horrible attempt to scare me. Oh mo-

Creeeeeaaaaakkkk..... The closet door. My head jerked to my left. It was opened, open enough for anyone, anything to squeeze through it. Impossible, the only way to open it.... From the outside. I sat up, my throat was dry and I could hardly speak. I heard footsteps... Like someone was crawling... My eyes moved to my right... Was someone there... "W-who..." I couldn't speak. I could hear my own heart beats... My heart was ready to leap out my chest and onto the floor.

That sound... It sounded like a woman.. She sounded like she was upset... Mourning over a loss... My body stiffened. I looked up, and there on my ceiling was a woman. She was on all fours, but her head, it was oddly shaped. Her neck was long, and her head was upside down, she wore a black torn dress, her face was hideous and deformed, I screamed, as she leaped down onto my small body. Her nails, sharp like claws dug into my skin. I saw my own blood splatter on the white walls in the darkness. My head became dizzy, as she shrieked and tore through me. She stopped as darkness surrounded me. She closed my eyes, her hands bloody, my own blood dripping from my face. "You shouldn't have looked at me." Her voice was low and raspy.. Her voice... She sounded like....
My mother.
